Warner Bros. released the first images from the live action Mortal Kombat remake. The new film is among the slate of Warner Bros. movies that will release simultaneously on HBO Max and in theaters this year. Entertainment Weekly featured all seven photos. You can check out those images and the official poster below.
Directed by Simon McQuoid and produced by James Wan and Todd Garner, the remake brings back some classic characters from the popular video game. The film stars Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Josh Lawson as Kano, Sisi Stringer as Mileena and Chin Han as Shang Tsung. Lewis Tan is also listed on the cast list, but his character wasn’t revealed until this past weekend. We now know Tan will play a new character, Cole Young. Cole is an MMA fighter and has a distinctive birthmark that connects him to the world of Mortal Kombat.

The Mortal Kombat synopsis reveals much about the film’s story … maybe too much. But hey! We don’t watch video game movies for the story, right? It’s all about the action.
“MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage — or why Outworld’s Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family’s safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with. Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark. Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe. But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana — the immense power from within his soul — in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?”
Mortal Kombat premieres in theaters and on HBO Max on April 16, 2021.
