Just a few days before the release of Mortal Kombat, Warner Bros has gifted us a look at the first seven minutes of the film, which introduces a bit of the backstory for Scorpian (Hiroyuki Sanada) and how the long-lived rivalry between him and Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim) began. I won’t spoil the clip for you, but it is definitely worth watching once, if not multiple times. Now I will say that it doesn’t feature the massive amounts of gore Mortal Kombat fans have come to know within the video game franchise. Instead, it features a more emotional and powerful moment as we see how these seven minutes will change the lives of these two men forever.

Mortal Combat follows MMA fighter Cole Young (Lewis Tan), who finds that he is a part of something much larger when the Outworld’s Emperor Shang Tsung (Chin Han) sends Sub-Zero after him. To protect his family, he seeks out Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), who takes him to train with Lord Raiden (Tadanobu Asano). Alongside some series favorites, including Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Kung Lao (Max Huang) and Kano (Josh Lawson) to compete in a tournament the likes Cole has never seen.

For months I have been anticipating the release of Mortal Kombat and practically counting the days this month awaiting its release. As a fan of the original movie franchise, I knew its flaws but still appreciated how it brought my beloved video game franchise to life. But now, it looks as if we are finally getting the adaptation we deserve. Between the trailers and this seven-minute clip, Warner Bros has proved that it understands what it takes to truly bring a Mortal Kombat film to life. I just can’t wait to experience this all for myself.

Mortal Kombat is set to release on Friday, April 23, 2021, in theaters and on HBO Max. How excited are you to finally get an adaptation we deserve? Let us know in the comments below and on social media!
