Various Mortal Kombat characters battle each other with the Mortal Kombat Onslaught logo between them.

Greetings, friends, and welcome everyone to Mobile Game Monday, where we chat about games you can play on the go. If you like to game on a phone or tablet, this is the place for you. Join us every week as we go on all sorts of adventures.

Mortal Kombat: Onslaught

Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is a team-building role-playing game developed by NetherRealm Studios and released in October 2023. This is not your typical Mortal Kombat fighting game. The player forms a team of four from over 50 characters including icons such as Scorpion and Kitana. Each character has their own fighting class like warrior, support, or assassin. Every character also has their own unique ability and when activated by the player, triggers a cut scene attack.

Create your dream team then lead them to victory (hopefully) against anyone who stands in their way. Watch the slaughter and be quick to activate each fighter’s special move as it becomes available. Didn’t make it through that last round? Rethink your strategy and try out a different team combination. Maybe add some support next time?

Collect experience to level your fighters and make them even more powerful. Relics like the Edenian Fan or the Crown of Jerrod provide bonus effects and can even unlock Fatalities. My personal favorite is the Klassic Cabinet because we have the exact same arcade cabinet at home. Various gear items will also help with survivability.

Mortal Kombat: Onslaught offers various game modes. Story mode offers a storyline that is unique to the mobile game. Begin your journey as Scorpion who has been tasked by Shinnok to recover relics that will restore his power. It sounds simple but of course, you are not the only one looking for these artifacts.

If playing against other players is more your style, there is Arena Mode which offers PVP battles. No Mortal Kombat game is complete without Boss Towers so you have those too. The most unique game mode is Chasm with some more interesting battles. For example, you fight a gang of Johnny Cages (ugh, my worst nightmare). It is silly but I think it is the most entertaining of the games modes. Lastly, Khronicles allows players to try out new characters that will continuously be added to the game. For example, the current Khronicles character is Scorpion from Mortal Kombat 1 so go check him out.

Our Adventure Ends Here

Even as a die-hard Mortal Kombat fan, I do not see myself playing this game much more. There is very little to no player interaction during combat. You really just sit there and watch your team fight until their abilities light up. I never thought I would say this about a Mortal Kombat game but this one is kind of boring.

It isn’t all terrible though, the graphics are gorgeous and the cut scenes are seriously epic. The game adds more stories to the universe and I am always down for some more Mortal Kombat lore. Simply because I am a sucker for gachas, it was fun to use the summoning portal to try to grab my favorite characters. Actually, everything about this game is pretty amazing except for the combat which is ironic for a game about fighting. Hopefully, we will see some improvements on the combat system in the future.

Overall Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is worth playing if you can get past the lackluster battles. There are plenty of redeeming qualities that give this game value, especially for MK fans. See if you can build a team that can survive the onslaught!

Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is free in the Google Play Store and App Store.

Take it easy and play it safe, gamers.
