What can I say other than it’s a hell of a time to be a Mortal Kombat fan? Not even a day after the beta closes, the NetherRealm gods bless us with another Mortal Kombat 1 teaser. This trailer is called “Rulers of Outworld” and focuses on Sindel and Shao Khan. Join me as we crack this baby wide open like a skull in the hands of Shao Khan.

The trailer opens with Raiden explaining, “Outworld can be both alien and intoxicating to Earthrealmers. While our realms are at peace, there are Outworlders who would prefer us to be at war.” Cue one of the most menacing villains in video game history, General Shao Khan. We get a nice close-up of his face complete with the iconic glowing red eyes. It looks like in this timeline Shao Khan’s weapon of choice is a brutal-looking axe. Then, a little taste of his combat style which is full of hard-hitting rush moves and brutal axe swings. Sindel introduces him as the Victor of the Tavarian War and Conqueror of the Quaton Planes.

It seems there is trouble in paradise for our favorite dysfunctional couple, Sindel and Shao Khan.  She prefers to keep the peace while he refuses to be, “Liu Kang’s lap dog.” Sindel also mentions Khan’s “illustrious father” who knew that war was a last resort. According to Fandom’s Mortal Kombat Wiki, Shinnok is the father of Shao Khan and Raiden in the 1997 film, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. Perhaps they will be pulling from the movie storylines in Mortal Kombat 1?

After the couple’s little argument, we then get to see what Sindel has to offer as far as combat goes. She is one of my favorite characters so I was happy to finally see some of her content. In the trailer, Sindel wrecks Shao Khan with her signature hair and banshee scream moves embellished with purple energy. Sindel’s kameo partner is a character that we haven’t seen in the Mortal Kombat games in a while, Motaro. He charges in and shoots red energy balls from his armored tail along with a pretty sweet horse kick move.

Sindel also mentions her late husband who created the tournament with Liu Kang. This is a reference to King Jerrod who was Sindel’s husband and Kitana’s father before Shao Khan invaded their home of Edenia, killed the king, and forced Sindel to be his wife. This makes me wonder if we will get to see more of the story of Edenia than we have before.

Liu Kang presents Raiden as the Earthrealm champion and then we see a short snippet of a match between Raiden and Shao Khan. Raiden’s moves seem like his pretty standard lightning moves but the more interesting thing about this fight is his kameo partner. This ‘new’ face is an older gentleman dressed in yellow and throws a special punch move with an impossibly fast fist. I wondered who this character was and found out that people are speculating it is Shujinko. He is a protagonist in Mortal Kombat: Deception who unintentionally releases the ultimate evil, Onaga. Onaga, the dragon king, was the ruler of Outworld before Shao Khan. I wonder if the appearance of Shujinko means that we will see the return of the dragon king as well. Not much is known about him so it will be interesting to get more of his story.

The trailer ends with Sindel performing a stunning fatality on Shao Khan. She wraps her luscious locks around Shao Khan’s arms, snaps them, and completely rips them off (with her hair). She then lifts Khan up by his armholes (also with her hair) and demands to know, “Who’s your queen?” before completely ripping out his skull with the spinal cord still attached. Did I already say it is a great time to be a Mortal Kombat fan? I added Fandom links to any ‘new’ characters in case you want to dive deeper and draw your own conclusions; the NetherRealm is exceedingly vast.
