Today, thanks to Universal, we got a better look at Mortal Engines. Released just days before the expected second trailer debut at NYCC 2018, we got a look at our heroine Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar). The mysterious girl is set on the revenge path and it will be a long and painful road for her, according to the featurette. Additionally, we got a new poster highlighting the character and a massive set piece.

Based on the novels by Philip Reeve, Hester is a “mysterious, feral bada**” looking for revenge against a man that murdered her mother. But she learns that it’s much bigger than herself or her revenge. When thrust onto a new path, the orphan must learn to trust people in order to reach her ultimate goal.

So far the film appears to be a pretty faithful adaptation. We won’t know until we see the film, but so far it all looks promising. The massive scale of the roaming cities are far greater than I had imagined them in my head when I was reading. The visuals are fantastic, something that has become a sort of calling-card when it comes to producer Peter Jackson and now his protege, director Christian Rivers. We’re bound to go on an epic adventure.

I’m most looking forward to seeing Hester Shaw grow throughout the film. While I won’t give away any book spoilers, it was wonderful to read her story. I’m also really looking forward to seeing more of the cities. I’m really geeking out over them – London looks insane! Check out the featurette below to get a taste of them.

What do you think of the poster and featurette? Let us know! Be sure to come back to Geek Girl Authority for more Mortal Engines news.

Here’s the official synopsis from Universal:

Thousands of years after civilization was destroyed by a cataclysmic event, humankind has adapted and a new way of living has evolved.  Gigantic moving cities now roam the Earth, ruthlessly preying upon smaller traction towns.  Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan)—who hails from a Lower Tier of the great traction city of London—finds himself fighting for his own survival after he encounters the dangerous fugitive Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar).  Two opposites, whose paths should never have crossed, forge an unlikely alliance that is destined to change the course of the future.

Mortal Engines is the startling, new epic adventure directed by Oscar®-winning visual-effects artist Christian Rivers (King Kong).  Joining Rivers are The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogies three-time Academy Award®-winning filmmakers Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, who have penned the screenplay.  The Universal and MRC adaptation is from the award-winning book series by Philip Reeve, published in 2001 by Scholastic.

Mortal Engines revs into theaters on December 14th, 2018.
