MORTAL ENGINES Gives Us a History Lesson in a New Extended Look Trailer

Yesterday Universal gave us a new look at the upcoming Mortal Engines film. The Peter Jackson produced feature based off of the novels by Philip Reeve will explore what happened to create the world they’re living in. It’s all ancient history to them. They also give us more action-packed scenes for us to sink our teeth into – in just a minute and 30 seconds!

A map of the world with holes burnt into it hangs on a wall. It’s a world we recognize – our world. A woman stares at it, commenting how she doesn’t believe this is how the world used to look. All she’s known is the kill or be killed life they’ve made for themselves since “the war”. A weapon was used to “shatter the Earth’s crust into a thousand pieces”, sending it’s survivors to save their cities. Some built cities on the water. Some built cities in the sky. Others, like jolly ol’ London, built massive cities on wheels, able to destroy any other wheeled settlement. The city then takes that settlement for their parts, their food, and use the citizens as slaves. Lovely.

From there the teaser gives us a frenzy of action scenes. Anna Fang (Jihae), a leader in the rebellion against these wheeled cities, will use her fighting skills and very red plane to help Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar) stop London before it’s too late. And by too late they mean before the powerhouse city can ravage the world even further. Will Hester and Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan) be able to stop London?

The visuals are fantastic so far. Sure, some things look heavily CGI’d (I’m looking at you, Shrike!) but otherwise we’re in for a feast for the eyes. Additionally, they’re really pushing the action in these trailers. So much so that you might believe most of the film will be fast paced action! But luckily we’re able to see the visuals clearly (I’m looking at YOU, Man of Steel!) so even if that’s the case, we won’t be lost in everything. I’m really looking forward to this!
