Actor, comedian and Oscar nominee Pat Morita is known the world over for his portrayal of Mr. Miyagi in The Karate Kid franchise. However, the upcoming documentary More Than Miyagi: The Pat Morita Story pulls back the curtain on the man who became an iconic pop culture staple.
Entertainment Weekly shared a trailer for More Than Miyagi: The Pat Morita Story. Directed by Kevin Derek and written by Derek and Oscar Alvarez, the documentary seeks to dive deeper into Morita’s extraordinary life. We’re greeted by a slew of familiar faces in the trailer, including Morita’s Karate Kid costars. Ralph Macchio, William Zabka and Martin Kove reveal tidbits about the man behind Miyagi. Additionally, comics Larry Miller and Tommy Chong make appearances in the trailer. Henry Winkler is another notable performer in the cast list from Morita’s time on Happy Days.

Now, the trailer for More Than Miyagi: The Pat Morita Story showcases shot-after-shot of Morita going on television and doing his stand-up routine. The documentary participants talk about Morita’s struggles with alcohol addiction and developing Pott disease (spinal tuberculosis) as a child. We also learn about his time imprisoned in a Japanese-American internment camp for three years during World War II. When starting out as a comedian, Sally Marr, fellow comic Lenny Bruce‘s mother, served as Morita’s agent and manager. In addition, we hear Morita tell his story in his own words as the documentary contains archival interview footage.
Morita’s legacy continues to live on in Netflix’s uber-popular hit Cobra Kai. He broke countless barriers throughout his storied career and impacted so many lives along the way. Admittedly, I don’t know much about the actor beyond his role in The Karate Kid films, so I’m excited to learn more about him.
Besides the trailer on EW, you can also check out a longer trailer for More Than Miyagi: The Pat Morita Story below courtesy of the Asian Film Festival Los Angeles’ YouTube account. Then, be sure to watch the documentary when it’s available on iTunes, Prime Video, etc. on February 5.
