Jared Leto is Morbius; Sony, Marvel

The Living Vampire will stalk the night at a later date.

As revealed by The Hollywood ReporterMorbius, the comic book flick starring Jared Leto as the titular character, receives a hefty delay courtesy of Sony Pictures and Marvel. According to THR, the recent spike in Omicron cases is the reason.

This delay isn’t the first for Morbius — the movie was pushed back a handful of times due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In January of last year, THR revealed the Leto-led project would premiere in early 2022 instead of October 2021.

Leto stars as Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist afflicted with a rare blood disorder who morphs into a “living vampire” to cure himself. Morbius becomes a vigilante while grappling with his newfound bloodlust and attempting to find a cure for his condition.

Daniel Espinosa helms the film with a screenplay from Matt Sazama and Burk SharplessAdria ArjonaTyrese GibsonMatt SmithMichael Keaton and Jared Harris round out the cast.

Morbius debuted as a foe of Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man #101, released in October 1971. He’s also an antagonist for the vampire hunter Blade.

Although this is purely conjecture, Keaton appears to reprise his role as Adrian Toomes/The Vulture from Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017). His inclusion in the recent Morbius trailer and signage referring to Spider-Man as a “murderer” might signify a connection between Sony’s Marvel flicks and Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Morbius delay means we won’t get another Marvel film for a few months since Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will now premiere on May 6, 2022.

So, when can we expect Leto’s living vampire to take the silver screen by storm? Friday, April 1, 2022. Here’s hoping this isn’t an April Fool’s Day prank.
