We first saw Jason Momoa as Aquaman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice when he hit a submarine with his trident and blew it up, but later this year we’ll get even more of him when he teams up with DC’s holy trinity — Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman — in Warner Bros.’ Justice League. Between that and the trailer where we finally heard him talk, that’s all we’ve seen of Aquaman, but today in an article from GQ Magazine Momoa spoke about his upcoming solo run which starts filming in a month for a 2018 release.

Just in case you missed that, in 2018 we’re finally getting an Aquaman movie. It was a joke even just ten years ago, and now it’s a major motion picture and has one of the biggest celebrities playing him.

Momoa said of his upcoming role, “We’ve never really seen anything from this guy before, so it’s fun to have a level playing field. There aren’t like four Aquamans before me. I get to set the tone for it.” Momoa then went on to add to this, “The guy was never really accepted on land, and he was never really accepted in Atlantis. He’s a half-breed. But he’s the best of both worlds. He just doesn’t know how to handle his powers. So it’s kind of a coming of age for a young man to a man, or a man to a king. He’s lost a lot of things and he’s got to cope. He’s an outsider.”

That’s an awful lot to have to unpack from the actor. First of all, this is the first we’ve heard of him being a “half-breed,” not fitting in on land or under the sea, despite apparently being “the best of both worlds.” The one that stuck out to us the most was him not understanding how to “use his powers.” This says to us that his powers and family heritage are all recent developments for us. That would also betrays a bit of his story — he’ll spend a part of the film learning about his family and who he is in that lineage.
