Walt Disney Company Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger has announced the date that Moana 2 will be voyaging into theaters. The sequel to 2016’s beloved animated feature Moana will reunite the titular hero (Auli’i Cravalho) and Maui (Dwayne Johnson) for an all-new adventure. Not too much is known about the plot of Moana 2. However, the press release promises that the sequel will take audiences “on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”

Moana 2 will be directed by Dave Derrick Jr. Derrick previously worked as a story artist on Moana. Meanwhile, the sequel will feature music by multiple artists. The music will be by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Opetaia Foa’i, and Mark Mancina.

Obviously, Moana 2 is destined to be one of the most highly anticipated movie releases of 2024. The original earned Academy Award nominations for “Best Animated Feature Film” and “Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures.” Plus, Moana swiftly catapulted both Moana and Maui into the ranks of recognizable and popular Disney characters. And in 2017, the movie was re-released in the native language of New Zealand, Māori.
