Highlights:

  • Variety has reported that Millie Gibson is poised to leave Doctor Who after Season 14, premiering in May 2024.
  • Varada Sethu will replace Gibson as the Doctor’s (Ncuti Gatwa) companion for Season 15
  • No reason has been given yet for Gibson’s impending departure.

Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday

Ruby Sunday’s time in the TARDIS will only last for one season. Variety reports that Millie Gibson, who plays the companion Ruby Sunday in Doctor Who, will depart after the upcoming and highly anticipated Season 14. Gibson made her timey-wimey debut in the most recent Christmas special, “The Church on Ruby Road,” opposite Ncuti Gatwa, the Fifteenth Doctor.

Varada Sethu, who will portray the Doctor’s companion in Season 15, is set to replace Gibson. Said season is currently in production in Wales. Unfortunately, we don’t have any details yet regarding Sethu’s character.

Prior to joining Doctor Who, Millie Gibson splashed onto the scene as Kelly Neelan in the decades-spanning soap opera Coronation Street, starring in 172 episodes. She also recurred on the family sport series Jamie Johnson as Indira from 2017-2018.

Varada Sethu and Season 14

As for Varada Sethu, she’s no stranger to science fiction. She portrayed Shira in Jurassic World Dominion and recurred as Cintra Kaz in the critically lauded Star Wars prequel series Andor opposite Diego Luna. Additionally, she played DC Harper Weston in the police procedural Annika

Doctor Who Season 14 will see a fun collection of guest stars, including the return of Yasmin Finney as Rose Noble, Bonnie Langford as Melanie Bush, Indira Varma as the Duchess, Lenny Rush as Morris, Jonathan Groff and Jinx Monsoon

The TARDIS Awaits

I’m curious why Gibson is departing after one season, but I’m excited to see the Doctor and Ruby’s adventures unfold in Season 14. I’m also tickled for Sethu to join Team TARDIS in Season 15.

Doctor Who Season 14 premieres in May 2024 on the BBC in the UK and Disney+ internationally. Seasons 1 through 13 are currently streaming on Max, while the 60th anniversary specials and the 2023 Christmas special are on Disney+.
