Highlights

  • Michelle Yeoh is set to star in Amazon Prime Video’s limited series Blade Runner 2099.
  • The series is a sequel to the previous Blade Runner films based on the Philip K. Dick novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.
  • Blade Runner 2099 is shooting in Prague after being delayed by the Hollywood strikes and scrapping its original location in Belfast.

Yeoh is In Everything… Everywhere

Michelle Yeoh hasn’t stopped since taking home an Oscar for Everything Everywhere All At Once, starring in everything from The Brother’s Sun to A Haunting in Venice and being honored with a Presidential Medal of Freedom in between. It doesn’t look like the legendary actress is slowing down any, as Deadline reports she will now head to future Los Angeles to star in Prime Video’s Blade Runner 2099

There’s no information about the role she’ll play or even the plot of the series, but the addition of Yeoh is a positive sign that the producers are going all in. Given her commitments to the new Star Trek spinoff television movie Section 31 and the forthcoming Avatar sequels, Yeoh’s dance card is very full. So bringing her on to the series seems like a vote of confidence from Amazon Prime Video.

Few Clues on Blade Runner 2099

Blade Runner 2099 is a bit of a mystery at the moment, but thanks to the producer and original Blade Runner director, Ridley Scott, there are few things we do know. The series is a sequel to the events of 2017’s Blade Runner 2049 in which replicants enslaved by their human creators learned that they could conceive and give birth. The film ended with what appeared to be a rising Replicant freedom movement.

It’s conceivable that 50 years on that tension may have led to a war with humans that is ongoing or complete. But in a statement to Deadline in August 2023, Scott opened up about his disappointment in not being able to direct the sequel to his 1982 original. He said of the new series, “It’s all set years on. To me, it circles the idea of Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World.”

Huxley’s vision of a dystopian future bears little resemblance to the one imagined in Blade Runner. However, it does feature a world where humans are birthed in artificial wombs and their lives are completely predetermined from birth. So perhaps this is a clue that the evil Wallace Corporation who builds and controls Replicants has grown in power. Or is this a hint that artificial beings have won? It’s all speculation at this point.

Blade Runner 2099 Delays And A New Location

Blade Runner 2099 was set to begin shooting in Belfast, Ireland in 2023. But after the double Hollywood strikes caused a work stoppage, the production relocated to Prague in the Czech Republic. Filming on the series began in April of this year and is ongoing. The first two episodes of the series will be directed by Jonathan van Tulleken (Shogun) who replaced the series original director Jeremy Podeswa (Station Eleven)  who departed the project during the strikes.

News on this series has been a bit sparse, including any mention of a release date. Now that the project has its lead in Michelle Yeoh, perhaps we’ll get more casting news, set looks and story information. Watch this space for more updates.
