After months of secrecy the veil has finally been pulled away from the Nintendo NX, meet the Nintendo Switch.  A console you can take with you anywhere.

No, really.

Nintendo released their first look trailer this morning, in it we finally get a clear view at the upcoming console which is half console, half hand-held.  In it’s traditional console form there isn’t much to it, it’s a small, compact system that stands vertically rather than horizontally, like traditional consoles.  When you want to take it on the go, the controller separates into two pieces and snaps onto either side of a small screen.  From there you are free to go about your business.

In fact, that small screen is the entire game system.  It will connect to a television while it rests in the Nintendo Switch Dock but, as you can see in the video, when it is lifted out of the dock it instantly switches to portable mode.  Even the single Joy-Con controller you play with in the house becomes two separate controllers on the go so you can play with your friends.

This is groundbreaking, as they promised and, I hate to say it, the secrecy was well worth the wait.  Instead of needing to buy two separate systems, one for home and for travel, that have separate game libraries, you now have an all in one system.

The Nintendo Switch is scheduled to hit shelves sometime in March 2017.

Introducing Nintendo Switch! In addition to providing single and multiplayer thrills at home, the Nintendo Switch system also enables gamers to play the same title wherever, whenever and with whomever they choose. The mobility of a handheld is now added to the power of a home gaming system to enable unprecedented new video game play styles.
