Earlier this week, Blizzard Entertainment introduced the latest character to be added to Overwatch: Baptiste! Baptiste is the 30th Hero and the 7th Support-type to join the Overwatch Lineup. Fans and players alike are already speculating on how Baptiste will affect team composition. His powerful combat abilities mixed with his unique talents (one of which is an Immortality Field) will make him a true adversary in the game. Likewise, we may finally have a character that can match the equally powered support of Brigitte. But for now, let’s get to know our new trusty Combat Medic, Jean-Baptiste Augustin.

Backstory

Baptiste grew up as an orphan in Haiti during the Omnic Crisis and witnessed first-hand true devastation and destruction. He quickly developed a desire to help others and enlisted as a Combat Medic for the Caribbean Coalition. After serving for several years, Baptiste was then sought out by Talon due to his unique skills on the field. For a while, life seemed good for Baptiste: easy missions and easy money. But, as the missions became more and more brutal and dark in nature, he saw that he was only continuing the cycle of destruction and loss that had left him orphaned. Forced to make a choice, Baptiste left the Talon mercenary group against their wishes. Ever since, Talon has sent operatives after Baptiste, hoping to take him down. He’s constantly been on the run, evading enemies, helping those in need, and trying to leave the world a more positive place.

Baptiste’s story and ideology center around the idea of Choice. While Baptiste may have made questionable choices in his past, he is determined to only make choices that benefit and create a brighter future. And his character build is an excellent representation of Choice. Players will have the choice to either utilize Baptiste’s Combat skills to knock out enemies or rely on his Healing abilities and support their team.

Baptiste’s Abilities

Baptiste’s expertise is Combat Support. So, similar to Ana, it looks like not only can he heal, but can also deal some devastating damage. Here’s Baptiste’s current ability loadout:

  • Biotic Launcher: Baptiste’s three-round-burst Biotic Launcher rewards accuracy and recoil control with significant damage output. It also doubles as a healing device, lobbing projectiles that heal allies near the point of impact.
  • Regenerative Burst: Baptiste activates an intense regenerative burst that heals himself and nearby allies over time.
  • Immortality Field: Baptiste uses a device to create a field that prevents allies from dying. The generator can be destroyed.
  • Amplification Matrix: Baptiste creates a matrix that doubles the damage and healing effects of friendly projectiles that pass through it.
  • Exo Boost: Baptiste’s Exo Suit allows him to jump higher by first crouching.

With this array of abilities, it will be interesting to see if Baptiste is utilized by players in the Overwatch League as a potential Support replacement for Moira and Brigitte. For now, the character has no set release date. However, it is speculated that he may be made available in-game this May, during the Third Overwatch Anniversary Event.
