Mayfair Witches Season 2 Episode 3, “Cover the Mirrors,” sees Rowan put her plan to kill Lasher into motion. Meanwhile, the Talamasca has a different objective. It’s somewhat better fare than last week, although not by much. A common thread between these first few episodes is Rowan’s conflicting feelings for Lasher. When he’s not there, she wants to kill him. However, in Lasher’s presence, she feels an inexplicable pull to protect him. “Cover the Mirrors” suffers from pacing issues, but the final moments leave the narrative in an intriguing place, especially as far as Lasher is concerned.

Mayfair Witches, “Cover the Mirrors”
We open with Lasher (Jack Huston) washing up in a fountain in a local park. He encounters a face familiar to those who’ve watched Interview with the Vampire Season 2 — Felix (Gabriel Freilich), Lestat’s squatting buddy in the 21st century. Felix can’t quite figure out what Lasher is, but he knows he’s not human.
Lasher tells Felix about his upbringing. He recalls falling prostrate on the stone floor of a church, begging for forgiveness. Was he a priest? Felix remarks that Lasher feels guilty, which is a human thing. It makes humans subservient. Felix advises Lasher not to play by humanity’s rules. As supernatural beings, they’re meant to cull the herd. Lasher can do as he pleases. Felix zips away in the blink of an eye, and we hear him feasting on a human nearby.

The Truth About Lasher
Later, Cortland (Harry Hamlin) calls the rest of the family, inviting them to Rowan’s (Alexandra Daddario) cocktail/protection spell party. After getting on the phone, Cortland admits he lied about Lasher’s presence. He told the family Lasher would be there. Cortland urges Rowan not to disclose the truth about Lasher. If she reveals he’s killing women in the family, the relatives will pin the blame on her. They won’t believe her.

Millie (Geraldine Singer) materializes, admitting to Rowan that Cortland’s not wrong. She asks Rowan how she plans to kill Lasher. Rowan refuses to divulge the details. Millie hopes Rowan is strong enough to go through with it this time. Meanwhile, Ciprien (Tongayi Chirisa) tells Albrecht (Dennis Boutsikaris) that it was consensual between Alicia and Lasher. Then, she started to bleed. Her last memory was Lasher standing there, watching her die.
Albrecht urges Sip to check out the morgue to see if anyone else died under similar circumstances. Moira (Alyssa Jirrels) tells Sip and Albrecht about Rowan’s spell protection party. Rowan wants the family — especially the women — to receive a protection spell against Lasher. Albrecht and Sip encourage Moira to attend. She’ll have the Talamasca behind her. Then, they’ll capture Lasher.

A Thrall
Then, Rowan and Dolly Jean (Charlayne Woodard) throw together ingredients for the spell. Dolly Jean wants to use Julien’s recipe, but Rowan doesn’t care if the spell is effective so long as it’s safe. The plan is for the scent of the Mayfair women, which is irresistible to Lasher, to draw Lasher home. Once that happens, Rowan will entrap Lasher in a thrall (just as he did to her in Season 1). Cortland pops into the kitchen. He reveals he called everyone on the list. He left a voicemail for Dolly Jean’s sister, Evelyn.

Cortland asks if he can run home to fetch more appropriate clothing for a party. Rowan refuses, and Dolly Jean reminds him that his father’s clothes are still in the house. Surely he can find something suitable. Cortland heads upstairs to call Albrecht; however, Albrecht rejects him. Albrecht tells Mawbel (Melissa Chambers) that Cortland is a dead end now.
Next, Sip reunites with Albrecht as the Talamasca gets in position for Operation: Capture Lasher. Albrecht reveals they’re sending Lasher to a safe house per Amsterdam’s instructions. When Sip asks which safe house, Albrecht shares that that’s classified information. He asked Amsterdam for permission to disclose all the details about the mission to Sip but was rejected on that front.

Sip is rightfully irritated. He’s proven himself a capable and worthy agent deserving of respect. Respect is a two-way street, y’all.

Meeting Evelyn
Later, Lasher wanders into a bustling pub. He sits at the bar and asks the bartender (K. Steele) for milk — two tall glasses. The bartender is none other than Evelyn Mayfair. Evelyn’s son, David (Madania Graves), reveals that Dolly Jean is calling her phone again. Evelyn ignores it. Meanwhile, Rowan tries to light candles with her abilities, but naturally, her powers are weaker when not in proximity to Lasher.
Then, Jojo (Jen Richards) arrives with lobster beignets. She asks Rowan if she’ll chat with Daphne (Olive Abercrombie), who’s sitting on a swing in the backyard. Daphne’s still in shock over losing her mother. Rowan agrees to lend a hand, but first, she tells Jojo that she woke up Cortland. Understandably, Jojo is pissed. She reminds Rowan that Cortland will inevitably turn on her. He’s only out for numero uno.
Outside, Rowan sits beside Daphne. She offers condolences before revealing how she felt when her mom died. “I felt everyone was talking, but no one was actually saying anything,” Rowan says. Daphne asks how her mother died. She knows it’s in the same manner as Gifford. Rowan admits they both had “injuries to their internal organs.” Daphne wonders if it’s contagious, to which Rowan reassures her that it’s all good. She encourages Daphne to eat the chocolate eclairs in her kitchen.

The Spell
Finally, the rest of the family arrives. Rowan puts on her best hostess face. Cortland spots Jojo and tries to get his daughter to talk to him. Someone asks about Lasher. Rowan assures the group that Lasher will be downstairs soon. One woman tells Rowan that she promised Dolly Jean she’d cover the mirrors; otherwise, they’d weaken the spell. Rowan offers to show the woman where the sheets are.

Next, Moira arrives, embracing her little sister. Rowan informs Dolly Jean about three people missing from the party. Dolly Jean reveals that Doreen and Marjorie are late for their own parties.
Then, Lark (Ben Feldman) calls Rowan, inviting her to meet him at a cafe in the Quarter. As it turns out, the trumpet is his favorite instrument. His flight is the following day. Rowan can’t meet him now (family thing, as usual), but she can hang with him in the morning. She urges Lark to cancel that flight. This mess will finally be behind her by then.

Restless
Rowan meets Ben (Mike Capozzi), Lucy’s father. He doesn’t know she’s dead (nor that Lasher killed her). Ben reveals that Lucy has been wanting to meet Rowan. She wants to attend medical school (well, wanted). Rowan sees Lucy’s corpse on the floor before her. Evelyn tells Lasher that it’s time for her to close up shop. Lasher grabs her wrist, demanding she sit with him. When he doesn’t let go of her, Evelyn slaps Lasher.

Then, the partygoers grow restless. They demand to know when they can meet Lasher. Moira calls Rowan out for lying to the family. Rowan admits he’s not in the house. The family wonders if he’s involved in the murders of Alicia and Gifford and Lucy’s disappearance. Cortland swoops in, claiming they find themselves vulnerable because Lasher’s gone. After all, Lasher has protected the Mayfairs for centuries.
Rowan pulls Moira aside. She admits that Lasher is behind the family murders. Moira urges Rowan to tell the family the truth. Rowan reveals her plan: protect the family with the spell, lure Lasher and then kill him. Moira is incredulous. Rowan is Lasher’s witch and his mother. Rowan encourages Moira to read her mind. When Moira tries to do this, though, a sharp, stabbing pain materializes in her head. That’s never happened before.

Proceed With the Plan
Rowan knows Moira is working with the Talamasca. However, Rowan needs everyone to back off. It’s the only way her plan to take out Lasher will work. Moira reports to Sip that Lasher’s not in the house, and Rowan doesn’t know where he is. Rowan also wants to kill him. Sip decides to proceed with the Talamasca’s plan. Sip relays that information to Albrecht. They can catch Lasher as he heads home.

Dolly Jean informs Rowan that she left multiple voicemails and talked to Evelyn’s son. Nothing. She shares that there’s bad blood between Evelyn and Cortland. They had a falling out. After this, Rowan asks Alonso (Eduardo Losan) to check on Evelyn and her son.
Meanwhile, Rowan overhears Cortland and Jojo in a heated argument. Jojo accuses Cortland of only taking action to protect himself. She recalls the day Cortland supported her transition. Jojo wonders if perhaps Cortland supported her because the women in this family are more powerful than the men. After all, Cortland helped Lasher feed on them. Maybe that’s happening again. Rowan calls Jojo outside so they can trap Cortland in the room.

On the Attack
In the bar, Lasher attacks Evelyn after the latter orders him to leave. David swoops in to save his mother, smacking Lasher repeatedly with a baseball bat. Lasher picks David up by the neck. Then, Evelyn stabs him with a smashed bottle. Lasher apologizes as he limps out of the pub.
Alonso calls Rowan to inform her about Lasher attacking Evelyn and David. Lasher should be heading her way now. Rowan finally breaks the truth to the family: Lasher killed Alicia and Gifford. Ben guesses that Lasher also killed Lucy, which Rowan tearfully confirms. Rowan declares that Lasher is a curse on this family. They’ve been shackled to him for far too long. Now, he’s killing them off.

The Capture
Jojo encourages everyone to stay for the spell. Daphne calls out Rowan for lying to her. She makes a beeline for the door. Rowan orders Jojo to stop Daphne from leaving. Unfortunately, when Rowan raises her hand to stop Daphne, she inadvertently entraps her and Jojo, who’s collateral damage, in a thrall. She wouldn’t be capable of doing this unless Lasher is nearby…

Rowan ventures outside to find Lasher on the street. Moira and the others file out to watch. Moira encourages Rowan to do the deed — kill Lasher. However, she can’t bring herself to do it. The Talamasca pulls up in multiple vehicles.
Sip tries to use a mist to knock Lasher unconscious, but Rowan dives in front of Lasher, taking the blast. She collapses on the ground as Albrecht and the others seize Lasher, throwing him in the back of a car. Sip and Moira watch Rowan as she loses consciousness.
