Welcome to the May installment of GGA’s monthly anime roundup for 2023, where we give you a detailed list of what anime is coming your way. This month is significantly lighter on the new releases, as much of the month is focused on continued broadcasting of the shows launched in April, which kicked off the Spring Anime season for 2023.

Remember that due to the Funimation/Crunchyroll merger, there is no new anime debuting on Funimation. Funimation will continue to add episodes of current shows, but the new series will air exclusively on Crunchyroll. We will miss Funimation, but as we look to the future, we have everything you should watch.

Demon Slayer (Season 3) – May 1

After the events of the Mugen Train Arc, Tanjiro, Insosuke and Zenitsu are taken on a mission by Tengen Uzui, the Sound Hashira, to the entertainment district of Yoshiwara, Tokyo, where Uzui’s three wives have mysteriously disappeared, a dangerous demon of the Upper Siz hunts its prey. Netflix distributes Demon Slayer slightly differently than Crunchyroll, so this is not a true season 3 for the show but rather just the Entertainment District Arc. Catch up on this epic tale on Netflix beginning May 1.

Ultraman (Season 3) – May 11

The long-awaited final season of Ultraman is finally coming out, and it is a bit bittersweet to see this anime end. The legendary “Giant of Light” was believed to have left Earth and returned to his home planet. However, his son, Shinjiro Hayata, discovers his father’s secret and takes on the mantle of Ultraman. Watch the conclusion to Ultraman on Netflix on May 11.

Yakitori: Soldiers of Misfortune (Season 1) – May 18

Set in a future where trade federations in constant conflict dominate the solar system. To escape his restrictive homeland of Japan, Akira enlists in a trade federation orbital drop infantry unit. Such infantry is notorious for their 70 percent casualty rate and is nicknamed “Yakitori” for their expandability. The opening sequence for this anime is fantastic, so I’m looking forward to watching it on Netflix starting May 18.

Cute Executive Officer R – TBA

Najimu Mujina might be an ordinary little girl, but she’s the CEO of the Mujina Company — and that makes her the cutest executive officer around. This adorable anime has a sequel series releasing on HIDIVE that is supposed to be launching; we hope to see it in May.
