New Constantine series from JJ Abrams in development at HBO Max

Here’s some good news for those us still holding on to hope that #SaveConstantine will happen one day: Constantine will be making his appearance in a two-part Legends of Tomorrow arc premiering in early 2018.

Matt Ryan will be reprising his iconic role in Episodes 9 and 10 of the time-traveling, DC superhero series. His last appearance was back in the Season Four Arrow episode “Haunted” just months after NBC cancelled the series after just one season. Many fans were hoping that either Netflix or The CW would save the show, but unfortunately they did not. Instead, Arrow Executive Producer Greg Berlanti promised that they would fit in the beloved character into the Arrowverse and as a result Constantine is now cannon.

The Legends of Tomorrow arc will happen chronologically after the Season 4 Arrow episode and will address the events that happened during that season’s finale. Not only that, but there will be some changes to the character that will be more in line with the character in the comic books.

“As for the character of Constantine, we knew that an alienated, chain-smoking, bisexual, world-weary demonologist would feel right at home among our Legends,” said Executive Producer Phil Klemmer to The Hollywood Reporter. “His appearance in episode 310 will involve the following: a revisiting of Arrow season four and the events following that season’s finale episode; a confrontation with this season’s Big Bad on Legends — the name we’ve only heard whispered until now, Mallus.”

Not only will Constantine be battling the Big Bad, but there will also be some fooling around on the Waverider as well as a dark magic v. dark magic confrontation with Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough)

“More than anything, the episode promises to be scary as you know what — tonally it’s The Exorcist meets One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Demonic possession in a mental institution — what’s not to love?” Klemmer concludes.

It’s unclear if Matt Ryan’s appearance in Legends marks the start of future guest appearances and nothing has been said to that extent. In the meantime, fans will be able to get their Constantine fix when the animated Constantine series premieres on The CW Seed in early 2018.

Season 3 of Legends of Tomorrow airs on Tuesdays at 9pm PST on The CW.
