It appears verbage is very important. Director Matt Reeves has taken to Twitter to clarify his statements regarding where The Batman stands in the DCEU. With all this spinoff and stand-alone movie news happening, it’s clear that things can be taken very literally. Or at least, context is king.

During his interview with The Business podcast, Reeves had said “When they approached me, what they said was ‘look, it’s a standalone, this isn’t part of the extended universe'”. It appears he didn’t quite mean it isn’t part of the extended universe. In a series of tweets, he explained that it was a simple misunderstanding.

Just to be clear: Of COURSE Batman will be part of the D.C. Universe. Batman will be BATMAN…In my comments from a while back about not being part of the DCEU, I was talking about The Batman being a story specifically about Batman……not about the others in the Universe. That it wouldn’t be filled with cameos servicing other stories — that it would be a BATMAN story.

Much like the Wonder Woman movie mostly focused on Diana’s story. However, Bruce Wayne made a vague appearance delivering the photo that jogged her memories. It seems Reeves vision may not have any reference to any other member of the Justice League. We’ll have to see how it plays out. At least Batfleck fans can breathe a sigh of relief for now seeing that it’s connected.
