Netflix and Kevin Smith‘s Masters of the Universe: Revelation is in full swing as we head into episode three. Up until now, Teela (voiced by Sarah Michelle Gellar) has turned her back on magic after learning the truth about He-Man’s (voiced by Chris Wood) true identity. But now, Eternia needs her help to find and reforged the Sword of Power. In episode three, “The Most Dangerous Man in Eternia,” Teela and the group head out to find Man-At-Arms (voiced by Liam Cunningham).
DISCLAIMER: This, my friends, is a recap and, by nature, will include major spoilers. I highly suggest watching Masters of the Universe: Revelation first before diving into these. Binge all five episodes here!
“The Most Dangerous Man in Eternia” opens with another flashback. This time He-Man and Teela have been kidnapped by Skeletor (voiced by Mark Hamill) and Mer-Man (voiced by Kevin Conroy). They are thrown overboard with the idea that they would drown, only to be freed by Man-At-Arms. While Skeletor and Evil-Lyn (voiced by Lena Headey) discuss boat color schemes, He-Man and the crew come crashing back into the action.
We even get a few cheeky one-liners from He-Man. As the flashback fades, we realize that Teela is the one telling the story to Andra (voiced by Tiffany Smith). It turns out that He-Man had the humor of a teenager who never got out. Evil-Lyn even goes as far as to say that He-Man may have been strong and wielded the Sword of Power, but it was Man-At-Arms that they all feared. She even calls him the most dangerous man in Eternia.
Evil-Lyn warns Andra not to get attached to dangerous men because they never return the affection and only care about themselves. Of course, Teela knows that Evil-Lyn is still holding onto Skeletor. But Evil-Lyn throws out there that Teela is still carrying a torch of her own.
We cut to a village where the cloaked Man-At-Arms is collecting water from a fountain while a line of people are waiting behind. A fight breaks out when an elderly gentleman trips and spills the enchanted water. It turns out that this water is some of the last enchanted water in Eternia. But before they can hassle the man anymore, Man-At-Arms steps in and helps.
Of course, this is the moment that Tri Clops (voiced by Henry Rollins) comes rolling in looking for a new sacrifice for Motherboard. A fight breaks out of Trap Jaw (voiced by Diedrich Bader) blows up the spring. Man-At-Arms isn’t about to let them get away with this and a fight breaks out. Just when it looks like he is about to get caught between a spear and a hard place, Teela and the crew join the fray. But the win is short-lived after the four get caught by Tri Clops.
Seconds before Evil-Lyn is about to become one with the Motherboard, Beast Man (voiced by Kevin Michael) rushes in to save them. He could care less about Teela, Andra and Man-At-Arms, but no one threatens Evil-Lyn. Tri Clops and his group leave. But I get the feeling that this isn’t going to be the last time we see them.
“The Most Dangerous Man in Eternia” picks up as Teela turns her attention to the cloaked older man and realizes it’s actually Man-At-Arms. He apologizes to her all the secrets and asks for another chance to prove she can truth him. Evil-Lyn reminds them that they are on a very time-sensitive mission and the family theatrics can wait till later. Teela explains they need him to reforge the Sword of Power. But, Man-At-Arms knows he can’t and could be executed if he even tried.
He is also on a time-sensitive mission and needs to get the enchanted water back before he loses more than just his rank – a friend. Teela and the group follow him to his hut, where they find a weakened Orko (voiced by Griffin Newman). Due to the magic depletion in Eternia, mages like Orko and Evil-Lyn are being hit the hardest. The enchanted water helps keep the suffering at bay, but unless things change, Orko will just continue to get worse.
Man-At-Arms still refuses to help reforge the sword. He feels like his world-saving days are over. He holds a told of guilt over the loss of Prince Adam and like he failed at this responsibility. This angers Teela, who feels like he hasn’t changed at all since the past and is too focused on the royal family that he doesn’t even pay attention to his own.
However, Roboto (voiced by Justin Long) chimes in that Man-At-Arms is protecting his family by not leaving them behind right now. Of course, Orko is ready for adventure and wants to go. Teela and Evil-Lyn both know that he doesn’t have the strength, but Orko just wants the chance to enjoy going on an adventure with Teela again. Teela is willing to let Orko come, but they still need Man-At-Arms to help reforge the Sword of Power.
Roboto has a different plan, though. He holds all of Man-At-Arms memories and believes that he would be able to do it. Man-At-Arms realizes that there is no way he could walk away from his family and agrees to go. But Teela has another job for him. She sends him to Castle Grayskull to protect Sorceress (voiced by Susan Eisenberg). Man-At-Arms decides he is going to share another secret with Teela, but Evil-Lyn cuts him off and reminds everyone that this isn’t the time for family feuds.
Teela and the group set out for Subternia across the Crystal Sea. She and Evil-Lyn think back to the last time they were there. Both were devoted to their male counterparts, and Evil-Lyn even admits she gave up her dream to help fulfill Skeletors. Teela doesn’t think they are that similar, but Evil-Lyn can see that Teela isn’t completely over what happened in the past.
On the other side of the boat, Orko and Andra discuss how his memories have started to blur together over time. His advice to her is that she keeps a journal of her adventures so when this is all over, she has something to look back upon. During their chat, Mer-Man and his cronies attack the ship and back Teela and the others into a corner.
Evil-Lyn reminds Mer-Man that they used to work side by side, but it seems like he is angry at her too. When Skeletor and He-Man died, Mer-Man believes they had the chance to take control of Eternia, but she turned her back on him. Now he is all about that sweet revenge. But like before, Man-At-Arms arrives just in the nick of time to save the day. He then forces Mer-Man to use his control of the sea to guide the ship to Subternia and in return, he gets to live.
Man-At-Arms warns Teela not to spend too much time in Subternia and the two share a heartfelt father-daughter moment before he heads off to Grayskull. “The Most Dangerous Man in Eternia” comes to a close as Evil-Lyn uses the top of the Havoc staff to open the gates to Subternia and the group makes their way below.
While this episode doesn’t pack the physical punch the previous ones did, it definitely packs an emotional one. Watching Teela reunite with Cringer (voiced by Stephen Root) in the previous episode was tearful. But the reunion with Man-At-Arms was like a waterfall effect. This man took her in as a child and raised her. Helped train her to be the best she possibly could be and protected her. But failed in her eyes when he kept Prince Adam’s secret from her. Watching them reconcile in the end and knowing that this is helping Teela heal was cathartic.
We also got a chance to explore a bit more of the dynamics between Evil-Lyn and Teela in this episode. Both have nearly devoted their lives to Skeletor and He-Man. When Skeletor died, Evil-Lyn realized that she had given all her life to fulfill his dreams, while Teela is dealing with the idea that Prince Adam never thought she deserved to know his secret. It is interesting to see just how similar and different these two characters can be. But putting that aside, the group is heading into Subternia and I don’t know if my heart can really handle this. Let’s rip this bandaid off and jump into episode four!
