It’s time to dive into episode eight of Netflix and Kevin Smith‘s Masters of the Universe: Revelation! Just when you thought they were done throwing twists and turns at us, they chuck another wrench into the series. In episode eight, The Gutter Rat, Evil-Lyn (voiced by Lena Headey) begins to doubt Skeletor’s (voiced by Mark Hamill) motives and decides now is the time to make an unexpected move.

DISCLAIMER: This, my friends, is a recap and, by nature, will include major spoilers. I highly suggest watching Masters of the Universe: Revelation first before diving into these. Binge all five episodes here!

The Gutter Rat opens as King Randor (voiced by Diedrich Bader) and Prince Adam (voiced by Chris Wood) discuss how it was Teela (voiced by Sarah Michelle Gellar) who brought Adam back from the dead. We get another emotional moment where Randor reminds everyone, even us, that we must learn from our mistakes and move on. He doesn’t hold any ill will towards Adam or Teela for their choices. He even thanks Cringer (voiced by Stephen Root) for saving them from Skeletor back at Castle Grayskull.

They also introduce King Randor to Andra (voiced by Tiffany Smith), who was an intricate part of bringing Adam home. Randor offers her anything she wants as payment and in the most Andra moment ever, she tells him the only thing she wants is to stay with her newfound family. Of course, they are preparing for war, so they can’t have civilians just wandering around. Randor decides that he is going to make Andra a lieutenant in his royal guard. Randor thanks her again for bringing his family home to Dread Point, but they share that it was Teela.

However, before she can go into the whole magic bit, Queen Marlena (voiced by Alicia Silverstone) arrives back at camp and we get another emotional moment between her and Adam. But we also see that the relationship between Randor and Marlena suffered in Adam’s absence. I’m sure it has a lot to do with losing their child and how Randor treated Adam when he was alive before. I hope we get the chance to see them come together as a family again.

The Gutter Rat jumps to the dungeons of Castle Grayskull where Man-At-Arms (voiced by Liam Cunningham) is trying to soothe the hurt Orlax of Primeria when Evil-Lyn pays him a visit. She wants to know what it feels like to have your power taken away. He asks her the same question, but she proves that she has more power than ever before. Man-At-Arms doesn’t care about her power. He knew someone far better who handled the power better. Of course, he is talking about the previous Sorceress (voiced by Susan Eisenberg).

He opens up to Evil-Lyn about how she was the best person he ever knew and the best Sorceress. He even takes a jab at Evil-Lyn about how she comes down and bullies them after Skeletor bullies her. Everyone can hear it and they pity her for it. He wants to know why she hasn’t done anything with this immense power she has been granted. It is pretty clear that Man-At-Arms is trying to drive a wedge between Evil-Lyn and Skeletor in this moment by reminding her that he only gets the power that she allows. And that she can take it back whenever she wants.

Back at Point Dread, Marlena and Adam discuss the tension between Randor and her. During the time that Adam was dead, Randor blamed Marlena for never telling him about Adam’s secret. And she felt like he resented her. And in turn, she began to resent him and eventually wanted to leave altogether. However, when she was about to head back to Earth, all hell broke loose and they were sent to Point Dread to begin preparing for war. Adam feels like he is the cause of this, but Marlena is right when she says that people sometimes fall apart.

The Gutter Rat kicks us back to Castle Grayskull, where Skeletor obsesses over Adam’s ability to still call down the power. Man has a one-track mind. When he realizes that Evil-Lyn doesn’t seem to be paying him any attention, he pulls her in and shows her the entire universe and how small they are among the cosmos and eventually shows her the Celestial Apex. The whole goal – to rule all of existence. I can’t knock the guy for having big dreams. However, Evil-Lyn feels a bit differently about this whole thing and it seems like the pain is all she feels.

Evil-Lyn seems to find Skeletor’s whole mission to kill He-Man to be quite the laugh. He doesn’t need all this power to do it yet decides that this is the best path. I think we are starting to see how Evil-Lyn really feels about him now. And frankly, we can see her side of this. All this time, he lied to her, siphoned her energy and now that he has all this power, his only goal is to kill He-Man? There has got to be something more to this plan, right?

Beast Man (voiced by Kevin Michael) uses this moment to dig more into Evil-Lyn’s feelings. We get a rather painful flashback to the early years of Evil-Lyn. Having almost been eaten by her family, she heads off to live in the sewers. After turning to a life of crime, Skeletor finds her and saves her from some unhappy men. We learn that Evil-Lyn doesn’t even like Skeletor anymore, but the debt she owes him for saving her life is big enough that she puts up with his antics. Beast Man is worried that Skeletor will kill Evil-Lyn one day and urges her to leave and never look back. But, it seems that Evil-Lyn has something else up her sleeve. Something that will save everyone from him.

The Gutter Rat jumps back to Teela and Prince Adam as they discuss how his secret affected the people around him. Teela also opens up about how she knows who her true mother is. Teela doesn’t blame Adam for not telling her, instead of focusing on how many times her mother could have. But, Teela can understand that never being able to leave Grayskull and be a part of a real family could affect one’s heart.

We slip back over the Evil-Lyn, who isn’t willing to wait to see her plan come to fruition. And after a bit of seduction, she gets Skeletor to power down long enough to take the Sword of Power. And in one of the best plot twists of this series, we watch as Evil-Lyn calls down the power and becomes Evil-God. Skeletor takes his leave and Evil-God makes her first speech to the people of Eternia. And in her first act, she destroys Preternia. As Prince Adam and the others decide what to do next, Teela realizes that it’s time for her to master her own power.

The Gutter Rat comes to a close as Prince Adam and the others get a visit from a rather unthinkable person – Skeletor.

Talk about plot twists! Masters of the Universe: Revelation continues to prove that it has outgrown its 80’s counterpart but still has excellent callbacks to it. We also get to see just how mature Netflix is willing to take this series. Evil-Lyn is willing to do whatever she can and I love that. We only have two more episodes in part two and I wonder how this is all going to work out. Will Skeletor really help He-Man and his enemies? Or is this just a plow for him to stay alive long enough to take the power back from Evil-Lyn? And will Teela be able to master all the abilities of her mother in time to help them?

No more wasting time; let’s dive into the next episode!
