After her critical success in the Netflix original film, Mudbound (including two Academy Award nominations) Mary J. Blige is getting into some action. She has signed on to join the cast of the upcoming Netflix series, Umbrella Academy, based on the Eisner Award-winning comic book series by Gerard Way.

Umbrella Academy follows a rag-tag, dysfunctional, estranged family of superheroes that come together… and apart, while investigating the their father’s mysterious death. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Blige will play Cha-Cha, an “unorthodox hit-woman who travels through time to kill assigned targets. Even though she has a few gripes about the bureaucracy of her employers, this job is her life. She is sadistic, sociopathic, and her reputation precedes her.” That’s a new realm for Blige, as is TV, but I can totally see her playing the part. She’s got plenty of strength on screen, as we’ve seen throughout her career.
Blige will be joining cast members: Tom Hopper, Emmy Raver-Lampman, David Castaneda, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher and Ellen Page. And, it looks like Netflix is putting some power behind the camera as well, with showrunner Steve Blackman (Fargo, Altered Carbon).
There are still no dates set for the premiere of the series. Stay tuned to GGA for further developments.
