Marvel announced at the Disney Upfront the premiere date for Echo. Echo continues the story of Maya Lopez, played by Alaqua Cox. Lopez is the first Native American and deaf lead character to be featured in a Marvel production.

We first met Maya in Marvel’s Hawkeye. She was the adopted daughter of Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio), who later found out that Fisk is responsible for her father’s death. Maya’s unique ability is that she can mimic others’ moves, which benefits her in a fight. Maya is a fierce fighter despite being deaf and having a prosthetic leg.

Echo will focus on Maya’s journey after the events in New York City in Hawkeye. The Disney Plus synopsis says, “she must face her past, reconnect with her Native American roots and embrace the meaning of family and community if she ever hopes to move forward.”

Zahn McClarnon also returns as Maya’s father. The cast includes notable Indigenous actors Graham Greene, Chaske Spencer, Tantoo Cardinal, Devery Jacobs and Cody Lightning. Charlie Cox will reprise his Netflix role as the Daredevil himself, Matthew Murdock. D’Onofrio will also return as Kingpin Wilson Fisk. Sydney Freeland, Dine, and Catriona McKenzie, Gunaikurnai, directed the episodes. There was a nationwide casting call for dancers, stickball players, and many other Indigenous roles, so this should be very familiar for indigenous viewers.

According to Deadline, Kevin Feige, producer and president of Marvel Studios and Chief Creative Officer, also announced that Disney Plus will drop all episodes at the same time as part of a new streaming strategy. “In Hawkeye, fans were first introduced to Maya Lopez, a character played by Alaqua Cox. She will return to get her revenge in Echo, a limited drama from an incredible team of indigenous writers, directors and cast members. And in a first for us all episodes will drop on November 29,” Feige said.

Marvel’s Echo will premier on Disney Plus on November 29, 2023.
