With Loki well underway, Marvel and Disney are ready to show us a brand new look at the next upcoming series, What If…? This is the first animated show within the MCU that will explore how the fates of our favorite heroes could have been changed if something else happened. Like what if Tony Stark met Erik Kilmonger (voiced by Michael B. Jordan) when his caravan was bombed at the beginning of Iron Man? Or what if Yondu (voiced by Michael Rooker) took T’Challa (voiced by the late Chadwick Boseman) instead?

The new trailer for What If…? shows us just how many paths these stories could have taken that would drastically change the outcome of the MCU we know today. We also get another look at the Watcher (voiced by Jeffrey Wright), who appears to be our guide through these storylines. He remarks how vastly different these are and that he will not interfere. We aren’t entirely sure how the episodes will break down, but I am hopeful they will take time to really explore how these small changes affect the major storylines we have come to know and love.
Like the other three original Marvel and Disney shows, I am also hopeful that this will help lead into the next phase of the MCU. What If…? doesn’t just seem to be a fun exercise of asking how things might differ. The trailer makes it a point to remind us that there are thousands of different universes to explore. And we know we are going to start seeing more and more of them with the upcoming films. So what if this is the way the MCU helps open those doors?
What if the Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) we meet in Thor: Love and Thunder isn’t the one we have known all along but from a different universe? Or what if this is the way the MCU reintroduces Killmonger back into the series? Or maybe I am just getting ahead of myself? In the end, this might just be something fun for us to explore. Either way, we can’t wait for this series to air! And it doesn’t look like we have to wait long!
