I, Tom Laurie, and my sister, Leona Laurie, are (re)watching every Marvel movie so we can cheerfully and critically discuss them. In what is indisputably our most forward looking episode yet, we look to the past to see the future.
In revisiting the start of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we applaud the leaps forward made by Marvel Studios while hoping for much greater progress yet to come.
Together we forge:
- A general appreciation for Robert Downey Jr.
- Relief that Marvel Studios never fully committed to the “Yellow Peril” racism behind The Mandarin.
- Recognition of the awkward power dynamics between Tony Stark and Pepper Potts.
- Hope for more women in lead rolls and fewer creeps.
- Mild pessimism over the possibility of Marvel Studios being affected by Marvel Comics throwing diversity under the bus.
