Mobile Game Monday: MARVEL SNAP

Several Marvel characters including Wolverine and Iron Man surround a Marvel Snap logo.

Greetings, friends, and welcome everyone to Mobile Game Monday, where we chat about games you can play on the go. If you like to game on a phone or tablet, this is the place for you. Join us every week as we go on all sorts of adventures.

Marvel Snap

Marvel Snap is the last of our award winners from 2023. This collectible card game developed by Second Dinner and published by Nuverse won Pocket Gamer’s Game of the Year Award. Build a deck of 12 cards featuring almost any Marvel character you can imagine and probably some you have never heard of. Armed with heroes and villains, test your new deck in a quick three-minute match against players from all over.

Gameplay

If you have ever played pretty much any collectible card game, the gameplay is nothing shockingly new. Each card has a power level and a cost to play the card. There are three locations for each player to control using power. You only have so much purchase power each turn, so plan your moves wisely. In only six rounds, the player must gain control of two out of three locations on the board by having the most power.

To keep things spicy, each location has a condition, such as losing power after each turn or the ability to move cards between locations. There are over 100 locations, which can put a wrench in your plans, but each match is completely different.

Building a good deck is about balance and understanding which cards work well together. If you are not an experienced deck builder, the game has an auto-build feature that will even build a deck around a card you like. Cards have rarity levels that can be boosted to upgrade your collection and earn rewards. Each upgrade unlocks an improved version of the card, complete with shiny new graphics.

Marvel Snap plays like a mix between Legendary and Smash Up, two of my favorite board games. It is the type of game that is very easy to learn but difficult to master.

Events

Initially, you must play through a starter season, which gets you used to the game. Don’t worry; it is quick and easy enough to get through. Then, the current season opens up. Planet Hulk is the current season’s theme and includes rewards featuring our favorite green giant. If you are willing to splurge for the premium season for $9.99, you can unlock even more rewards like a special Hulk avatar. So, if you are a fan of the mean green smashing machine, definitely hop in the game now and get those sweet rewards.

Some upcoming events include the Animal Assembly, highlighting our favorite furry friends from the Marvel Universe. The Steampunk Variant Rush event features ways to grab steampunk variants of your favorite cards. Check in regularly so you don’t miss a cool variant of your favorite card.

Our Adventure Ends Here

There are so many things about Marvel Snap that make it a winner. The most obvious is the marvelous artwork for the seemingly never-ending pool of Marvel characters — 261 characters, to be exact. Some cards have artwork variations, which means even more collectible fun. Squirrel Girl is my favorite Marvel character, so I look forward to collecting all her variants, including the zombie and magical girl versions.

This truly is a collectible card game because I immediately looked up the cards I wanted and vowed to do whatever it took to get them. Unfortunately, that sometimes means flat-out paying money for certain cards. As soon as I started the game, I dropped a whopping $2.99 to get Spiderman into my deck — worth it.

For veterans of collectible card games, dropping moolah for better cards is nothing new. Part of the fun is the chase for that one coveted card. However, enjoying the game without losing tons of cash is possible. The game progression system is well-designed, and I could quickly acquire a good variety of cards simply by playing matches.

I especially appreciated the quickness of the matches. Unfortunately, I rarely have time for long gaming sessions these days, so I am always drawn to a game I can play in quick bursts. The matches consist of six turns and take only three minutes, so you can easily fit this game into any schedule. So, now that you know the basics, get out there and start collecting your favorite Marvel friends and foes.

Marvel Snap is available for free in the Google Play Store and App Store.

Take it easy and play it safe, gamers.
