On Sunday, April 2, 2023, the official trailer for the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Disney+ series Secret Invasion was released. The trailer featured a better look at many of the new and returning characters who will appear. However, while the teaser revealed the show’s tone of paranoia, it contains few hints about the plot.

Fury

The Disney+ series will see the return of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. This incarnation of Fury originated with Jackson in the first MCU movie: 2008’s Iron Man. While he did not appear until the mid-credits scene of Iron Man, his memorable cameo has been parodied countless times in the intervening years.

More details about Fury and his history with superheroes were revealed in 2019’s Captain Marvel. In that movie, set earlier on the timeline (in the 1990s), Fury was inspired to lay the groundwork for the Avengers Initiative. He also met a new extraterrestrial ally: Talos the Skrull (Ben Mendelsohn). Talos will be returning in Secret Invasion, as well.

Fury will have other familiar allies in the show. These include Agent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), first introduced in 2012’s The Avengers. Also in the trailer is Everett Ross (Martin Freeman), who first appeared in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. Another familiar face who returns is James Rhodes (Don Cheadle). However, at this juncture, it is impossible to know whether these are genuinely the characters we believe them to be. Because of the shapeshifting nature of the Skrulls, any (or all) of them could be alien imposters.

In addition to these returning faces, the trailer gives us a better look at new characters Sonya Falsworth (Olivia Colman), G’iah (Emilia Clarke) and the rebel Skrull leader (Kingsley Ben-Adir). Furthermore, we may have glimpsed the Super Skrulls, who can mimic superheroic abilities.

And finally, a gravestone seems to suggest that Fury’s previously unseen father, Colonel Nicholas J. Fury, may also play a role in the story. While it isn’t an MCU movie, David Hasselhoff played the titular role in 1998’s Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Hasselhoff previously appeared in the MCU in 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2However, an actor playing multiple roles in the MCU would not be unprecedented.
