It’s Loki‘s world, and we’re merely living in it. As reported by Deadline, Rafael Casal will join the cast roster for the Tom Hiddleston-led Marvel series in an undisclosed yet “major” role. According to Deadline, Marvel declined to comment, but word of Casal’s involvement spread through the digital grapevine when a photo featuring him with Hiddleston and Owen Wilson surfaced online.
Internet speculation believes Casal will portray Zaniac, a powerful entity that possesses various hosts with the ability to form “energy knives.”
Casal is known for creating, writing and starring in 2018’s Blindspotting alongside Daveed Diggs. Last year, a Blindspotting series debuted on Starz starring Jasmine Cephas-Jones, with Casal and Diggs returning as creators and in supporting roles. Casal also recurred on the Ethan Hawke drama The Good Lord Bird.
Loki Season 1, which bowed out on July 14, 2021, received rave reviews from critics and audiences. It’s the only Disney Plus original series to snag a second season, as most Marvel shows are limited series. Season 1 ended with Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) killing He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors), essentially cracking open the multiverse. Loki (Hiddleston) returned to the Time Variance Authority in an alternate timeline, with Mobius (Wilson) not recognizing him.
I’m an avid fan of Blindspotting and would love to see a creative force like Rafael Casal try something different. Whether this internet speculation rings true will hopefully come to light soon. Regardless, I’m excited for all things Loki.
