Today, it seems that Marvel finally took a step in the right direction in regards to getting their characters and stories into the video game space. In a press release from Square Enix, we’ve learned that they are teaming up with Marvel to create a game named “The Avengers Project.”

It’s unclear what this game will be, what the story will be, which characters will be in it or when it will come out, but at least we know that Marvel and Square Enix are moving forward together. As the press release reads, the game will “be packed with all the characters, environments, and iconic moments that have thrilled longtime fans of the franchise.” They then go on to say that the game will feature “a completely original story” and that it will “introduce a universe gamers can play in for years to come.”

Finally, they say that more details about “The Avengers project and other games will be announced in 2018.”

That’s right. A year from now we’ll get details from this new deal, which they refer to as a “new multi-year, multi game licensing agreement to develop and publish original games based on beloved Marvel Super Heroes, beginning with The Avengers.” In other words, we’re starting with The Avengers, but perhaps some day we’ll bring you The Defenders or a stand-alone Doctor Strange game. Dare we dream for an epic X-Men or Fantastic Four title?

Square Enix and Marvel are also working alongside Crystal Dynamics, the folks responsible for Tomb Raider, as well as Eidos-Montreal, the minds behind Deus Ex.

As Marvel Senior Vice President, Games & Innovation, Jay Ong said,“By partnering with Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montréal, we are now working with two of the industry’s most talented and respected game development studios to bring Marvel stories to life in ways our fans have never experienced.” He then went on to add, “The Avengers project is a perfect example of how Marvel is making games a key part of the landscape for Marvel storytelling, alongside comics, television and film. We can only do this by matching our greatest Super Heroes with the world’s top developers, such as the creative minds at Square Enix.”

Square Enix CEO Phil Rogers echoed the sentiment saying, “Marvel’s diverse, innovative universe has created millions of longtime fans, including all of us.” Rogers then went on to add, “It’s exciting to bring together Square Enix’s award-winning development studios with Marvel’s extraordinary storytellers to establish a new entertainment powerhouse.  This collaboration of passion and talent will craft epic, imaginative experiences allowing gamers to live out their Super Hero dreams like never before.”

Along with this announcement came a little teaser to get everyone excited. It seems that, in this game, the Avengers have been disassembled but a new threat is promising to bring the team back together. While we have no other details on it, at least you can watch the trailer, which we’ve embedded below.
