Announced on Marvel.com today, Martin Freeman, star of BBC’s Office and the Hobbit trilogy, has joined the cast of Captain America: Civil War in an undisclosed role.

As Kevin Feige said of Freeman, “From his roles as Bilbo Baggins and Doctor Watson to Tim in The Office, Martin’s range from the dramatic to the comedic has consistently impressed us. We couldn’t be more honored or excited to have such a talented actor join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

And, as we all know, Freeman’s Sherlock co-star, Benedict Cumberbatch, is already a part of the MCU as Doctor Strange, so perhaps we’ll get to see the two of them together in this film, which would mean we’d see Doctor Strange in Civil War, which would be just about the best news ever.

Let the speculation begin! Who is Martin Freeman playing. Easy money is that they’ll use his bumbling everyman personality to embody some unfortunate bureaucrat having to deal with the fall out of these super-powered heroes fighting each other. However, with Daniel Bruhl confirmed to play Baron Zemo in the film, is it possible that Freeman is giving us a turn as a a member of the Masters of Evil. Think they’ll bring in the Thunderbolts? Are we going that direction?

Probably not, but Martin Freeman could make a pretty interesting interpretation for the intuitive technological genius, Paul Norbert Ebersol, a.k.a. The Fixer, a.k.a. Techno, a.k.a. Ogre.
