What is it with Sci Fi and Moby Dick? Greater minds than mine have written lengthy dissertations on the topic. Here’s a short list of references: The X-Files, Wrath of Kahn, First Contact, Futurama, Leviathan, Alien, Jaws, and of course Mr. Magoo!
and this:
Starring Barry Bostwick
I’m not kidding in the least when I say I can’t wait to find this. Produced by The Asylum. I love them with all my heart
Where was I? Oh yes. On November 22 and 23rd, the Venice Oceanarium will host a marathon reading of Moby Dick. It’s kind of a big deal. They’ve been doing this since 1993.
Tim Rudnick and Suzanne Thompson, your host and curators
The Oceanarium promises that anyone who shows up to read will get a whack at some text. As the website says “Everybody’s Welcome.” Melvillepalooza! You’ll need sunscreen and a blankey – book provided.
AND BY THE WAY, it’s all timed to coincide with the California Gray Whale migration. Per the Venice Oceanarium website: The gray whale makes one of the longest of all mammalian migrations, averaging 10,000-14,000 miles.
Bring your oldentimey spyglass and get ready to holler “thar she blows!” Also, your Kirk-style reading specs for the chapter book (I assume you’re allergic to Retinox 5).
Check out and visit their sponsors. Shop local, friends. I can’t reveal any secrets, but there will be treats and discounts a-plenty for the lucky attendees and readers. Show up and enjoy the bounty!

Heads Up: It’s a bit confusing finding the location. Check out Windward ave on your map app cause it’s a challenging street to find.
Parking: You could drive straight down Washington or Venice and park right near the beach for six beans. That’s gonna fill up fast on the weekend though. Dweeb lives off Washington, so the Number 1 Culver City bus is my ride of choice for this. Outliers, street park on Washington and jump on the Number 1! It has a Windward Blvd & Main Street stop. One dollar each way. Short walk to the spot. Easy Peasy.
Weather: Statistically, morning and evening temps for this average 50 degrees, so bring dat fleece.
Daytime hours are, of course, Southern CA perfection.
The Oceanarium also hosts Late Night Grunion Parties. Behold.
