MANHUNT Series Finale Preview: Here’s Mudd in Your Eye

What happens when the killer’s been killed? Stanton (Tobias Menzies) is out for comprehensive justice in Manhunt Season 1 Episode 7, “The Final Act,” by putting the conspirators behind the assassination on trial by military tribunal.

Mudd (Matt Walsh), Mary Surratt (Carrie Lazar), Herold (Will Harrison), Powell (Spencer Treat Clark), Spangler (Walker Babington), and Atzerodt (Tommy Turvey) will all stand trial. Whether Prosecutor Joseph Holt (John Billingsley) can prove Sanders (Anthony Marble), Surratt Jr. (Joshua Mikel), and Jefferson Davis (Craig Nigh) conspired with them is the big question.

It’s an ambitious test of Stanton’s belief in how far they can bend the rule of law in their favor. Holt and Eckert (Damian O’Hare) have their doubts. But Stanton needs the win to assuage his guilt over Lincoln’s (Hamish Linklater) death. He carries the weight of Reconstruction on his shoulders.

Stanton’s Endgame

As such, he wages a war on two fronts. With the tribunal, he must front an army of witnesses who can testify with absolute certainty to the guilt of the conspirators. At the War Department, he must stave off Johnson’s (Glenn Morshower) encroachment on the powers of his office.

Stanton’s goal is to live to see Lincoln’s dream realized. And as we’ve learned, he does not delegate. Will he be able to hold out to see the foundational pieces of Reconstruction established? 

And what about all the players we’ve gotten to know over the course of these action-packed twelve days? (TWELVE DAYS. Wow. It’s hard to fathom that everything we’ve seen has taken place over just twelve days.)

The history books can tell us all about Andrew Johnson, Mary Todd Lincoln (Lili Taylor), and the other big names. But what about Mary Simms (Lovie Simone), Lafayette Baker (Patton Oswalt), and Conover (Josh Stewart)? 

And will Lady Justice ever bring her hammer down on Sanders, Surratt Jr., and Jefferson Davis? Considering the socio-economic standing of those three, I suspect not.
