Yesterday, London-based tabletop publisher Modiphius Entertainment officially announced the release of their latest series of print titles: Odyssey of the Dragonlords! Published under the Open Gaming License (OGL) and designed by former Bioware developers, Odyssey of the Dragonlords is a new adventure setting for the Dungeons & Dragons, 5th edition (D&D 5e) tabletop role-playing game (RPG). Taking inspiration from Greek mythology, D&D players join their fellow heroes on an epic quest to save the world of Thylea. All Odyssey of the Dragonlords titles are available now on Modiphius’s website, with third-party retail coming to local game stores next month.

Sing to me of the man, Muse…

Featuring full-color maps and illustrations, Odyssey of the Dragonlords is set in the fantasy world of Thylea. The geography of Thylea is heavily modeled after the mainland and islands of Ancient Greece. As one of the heroes of Thylea, your character must save the world by sailing the islands of the Forgotten Sea, battling the Titans themselves, and/or becoming one of Thylea’s legendary Dragonlords!

In Odyssey of the Dragonlords, your heroic D&D character will forge their very own Greek myth.

In addition to incorporating new Thylea-specific options for D&D 5e classes, Odyssey of the Dragonlords features the new “Epic Path” theme. An Epic Path is one of eight powerful story motivations for your character. Epic Paths are the main feature establishing Odyssey of the Dragonlords as unique among D&D settings. Fulfilling your demigod potential like Heracles or destined for doom like Achilles is but a few of the Epic Paths your character can follow.

The adventure book also contains over 50 new monsters, magic items, and races, all inspired by Greek mythology. Have you ever wanted to play as a satyr hoplite soldier or a medusa Amazon warrior? Now you can! Players are also encouraged to craft their own god-like magic items by journeying in-game to the Mithral Forge and crafting their own custom piece of Greek myth.

All men need the gods…

Odyssey of the Dragonlords is the product of the creative minds at Arcanum Worlds. Arcanum Worlds is an Austin-based tabletop publisher that specializes in D&D content, such as their 160-page Heroes of Baldur’s Gate book on DMsGuild. Arcanum Worlds generated a lot of attention from the onset due to their founders: veteran Bioware developers James Ohlen (Lead Designer/Creative Director for Baldur’s Gate, Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age: Origins, and more) and Jesse Sky (Lead Designer/Creative Director for Star Wars: The Old Republic).

Arcanum Worlds and Odyssey of the Dragonlords were first announced on July 12, 2018 when James Ohlen announced his departure from Bioware and his sabbatical from the video games industry as a whole. On February 21, 2019, Arcanum Worlds offered a sneak peek at the adventure setting. A free 32-page Odyssey of the Dragonlords: Player’s Guide was released in partnership with Modiphius. (If you’re curious to learn more about Thylea, the original Player’s Guide is still available for download at DriveThruRPG.com!)

The Odyssey of the Dragonlords: Player’s Guide provides an abridged overview of Thylea’s history and factions, and a sampling of the races, class options, and Epic Paths in Odyssey of the Dragonlords.

Deciding to expand the setting into a full 280-page roleplaying adventure book, Arcanum Worlds partnered with Modiphius to launch a Kickstarter on April 16, 2019. Drew Karpyshyn (Senior Writer for Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and more) was brought on to the Arcanum Worlds design team to craft Thylea’s lore. Within the first 11 hours of launching, the Kickstarter’s $50,000 goal was already fully-funded. After a month of stretch goals met and exceeded, Odyssey of the Dragonlords was expanded to a whopping 460 pages!
