Welcome back to Magicians Monday, fellow Fillorians! If you eat, sleep and breathe The Magicians like I do, then this column is for you. Each week, we’ll delve deeper into our favorite show about magic. Be sure to keep a glass of wine handy and your spell-casting fingers at the ready. We’ll be reveling in all things The Magicians until the Season 4 premiere on January 23rd!
Now, I’m a huge proponent of “what ifs” and hypotheticals. It’s how my over-analytical brain functions. And what better way to channel that meticulously detail-oriented side of my mind than sorting The Magicians characters into Hogwarts houses? I’ve always viewed The Magicians as an adult version of Harry Potter. Would the Sorting Hat place Quentin in Gryffindor? Margo in Slytherin? Hey, we have to pass the time somehow while we impatiently wait for January 23rd.
Alright, let’s kick off this week’s festivities with a deep dive into Ravenclaw – the brainy bunch of Hogwarts. Here’s the official description of Ravenclaw from Pottermore:
Ravenclaws prize wit, learning, and wisdom. It’s an ethos etched into founder Rowena Ravenclaw’s diadem: ‘wit beyond measure is man’s greatest treasure.’
So, according to Pottermore, three words commonly attributed to members of this house are wit, learning and wisdom. The Magicians boasts its fair share of intellectual characters. Magic itself, as it exists in this fictional universe, is innately academic. Lev Grossman‘s book trilogy peels back the layers of magic, revealing that its fundamentals are rooted in math. The series touches on this, but not quite as in-depth. We see our protagonists hard at work on intricate spells that require an immense amount of math. I feel like The Magicians is subtly telling me that I’d be a terrible magician because…math. Not a fan.

Ravenclaw
Julia Wicker
Now, Ravenclaw wouldn’t be complete without mega tree goddess Julia Wicker (Stella Maeve). Okay, former mega tree goddess. If you’ll recall, in one of the 39 timelines enacted by Jane Chatwin, Dean Fogg classified Julia as a Knowledge student. She possessed an unrivaled thirst for magical knowledge. This is evident even in the present timeline when Julia was denied acceptance to Brakebills. Yes, she careened off the beaten path, cavorting with dangerous hedge witches, but she strove to learn everything she possibly could about magic. Essentially, she’s self-taught. Julia trained harder than most people at Brakebills. She climbed to the top of the magical ladder, morphing into one of the most powerful magicians to date. Julia even ascended to goddess status!
Of course, at first glance one might sort Julia into Gryffindor. However, I truly believe Julia’s wit, desire to learn and the wisdom she’s cultivated from her experiences garners her a spot among Ravenclaw’s best and brightest. Yes, her rising above rape and mass slaughter shows a penchant for bravery. But I also believe Julia’s refusal to seek revenge against Reynard in the end puts her earned wisdom on display. She can be pragmatic when it counts. Sometimes pragmatism and mercy go hand-in-hand. All hail former mega tree goddess Julia!
Alice Quinn
Alice Quinn (Olivia Taylor Dudley) is your stereotypical Ravenclaw – the smart girl with a hunger for knowledge. Of course, Alice is a naturally gifted magician, one who surprisingly didn’t receive an invite to Brakebills. She merely stumbled upon the campus on her quest to uncover her brother Charlie’s death, easily severing the college’s intricate wards. She occasionally viewed her intellect and inherent magical prowess as burdensome. However, Alice’s deep desire for magic always kept her strolling along the knowledge-seeking path. In fact, she was resentful toward Quentin (Jason Ralph) for reviving her in Season 2, since she spent her post-death time as a niffin. While in niffin form, Alice not only wrecked havoc across the multiverse, she also absorbed all things magic. She became an omniscient being, seeing and knowing everything. Of course, upon her return to the Land of the Living, Alice lost that knowledge.
Now, Alice has the “wit” and “learning” bits of Ravenclaw down pat. What about “wisdom?” Remember when Alice boldly changed her stance on whether magic should be in the hands of humans? She ended up taking a backseat during Season 3’s epic quest because of said stance, citing that people can’t be trusted with so much power. Well, she was subtly referring to herself, but in a way she’s wiser because of her niffin experiences. Wisdom=check!
Dean Henry Fogg
Of course, we know that Dean Fogg (Rick Worthy) was a Knowledge student during his tenure studying at Brakebills. Even though he’s no longer a student in an official capacity, Fogg still strives to excel in his intellectual pursuits. Once a Knowledge student, always a Knowledge student. Fogg is also a talented magician, and he takes a liking to Alice and Julia – both of whom were sorted into Ravenclaw. Coincidence? Well, sorted by me, that is. Fogg is constantly learning and evolving his magical skill set. He is a college dean after all.
Not to mention, Fogg most certainly possesses an immense amount of wisdom. He’s seen a thing or two as a magician. That, and he survived a near-fatal attack courtesy of Martin Chatwin. Fogg spent quite a bit of time adjusting to being blind and retraining his hands for the purpose of spell-casting. That takes perseverance and wit. Fogg’s wisdom increased tenfold by overcoming this obstacle alone. He’s a survivor.
Well, that’s a wrap on the Ravenclaw sorting session! These three are exemplary members of their house, and I’ve no doubt they’ll make Rowena Ravenclaw proud.
