Welcome back to Magicians Monday, fellow Fillorians! If you eat, sleep and breathe The Magicians like I do, then this is the column for you. Each week, we’ll delve deeper into our favorite show about magic. Be sure to keep a glass of wine handy and your spell-casting fingers at the ready. We’ll be reveling in all things The Magicians until the season four premiere on January 23rd!

Now, this week I’d like to switch gears a bit. I’m a huge proponent of what ifs and hypotheticals. It’s how my overly analytical brain functions. And what better way to channel that meticulously detail-oriented side of my brain than sorting The Magicians characters into Hogwarts houses? I’ve always viewed The Magicians as an adult version of Harry Potter. Would the Sorting Hat place Quentin in Gryffindor? Margo in Slytherin? Hey, we have to pass the time somehow while we impatiently wait for January 23rd.

So, let’s kick off the party with our first house: Gryffindor. Here’s the official description of Gryffindor from Pottermore

With a lion as its crest and Professor McGonagall at its head, Gryffindor is the house which most values the virtues of courage, bravery and determination.

Courage, bravery and determination. Well, there are characters aplenty who fit the bill on The Magicians. So many trials and tribulations that require bravery! Remember defeating The Beast? Saving Fillory from Ember and Umber? Going on an epic quest to save all of magic? Below I’ve listed my picks for this lion-like house.

Margo Hanson

You knew she’d be sorted here, right? Initially, Margo (Summer Bishil) came off as Slytherin. Especially in Season 1. However, my outlook of her changed in Season 2 when Margo took her throne as High Queen. She was incessantly fighting for agency in a world where the patriarchy ruled with an iron fist.

Not only that, but said patriarchy created an increasingly growing chasm between her and her best friend Eliot (Hale Appleman). Ruling a fantastical world has its pros and cons. Margo rose to the occasion, displaying an immense amount of bravery and courage when standing up to the Fairy Queen. She was determined to do right by her country. Margo, as High Queen, constantly placed precedence on the needs of her people over her own. So, add “selfless” to that list. Margo even squished her own eyeball as an act of defiance to the Fairy Queen! Her own forking eye. Thankfully, she can pull off an eye patch like nobody else.

Penny Adiyodi

Of course, Gryffindor wouldn’t be complete without Penny (Arjun Gupta). To me, he is the very essence of bravery. How many times has he sacrificed himself for his friends? The biggest personal sacrifice I can think of is his sojourn into the Poison Room to retrieve the god-killing book for Kady and Julia (Stella Maeve). Said room literally gave him cancer, a rapidly spreading disease that eventually decimated his body. Penny remained an astral projection after his physical death, roaming in the astral plane, unseen by his loved ones. No greater sacrifice, y’all.

Now, Penny may come off as a bit of an arse. He’s brash, with a foul mouth to match. Regardless, Penny has a heart of gold underneath it all. He’s incredibly loyal to his loved ones, and willing to put his own life in peril for the sake of others. If that’s not courage, I don’t know what is. He’s even saved Quentin (Jason Ralph) multiple times, and we all know how much Penny despises him. Especially when Quentin is singing Taylor Swift in his head.

Kady Orloff-Diaz

Penny wouldn’t be complete without his equally courageous other half, right? I’d say Kady (Jade Tailor) fits more of the “determined” aspect of Gryffindor’s character traits. Kady has displayed her immovable determination time and time again. Remember when she fought tooth and nail to slay Reynard? When she was determined to restore Penny to his normal form? Or her part in the quest to restore magic? Once Kady sets her mind to a task, she’ll surely accomplish it. Even if it takes all the blood, sweat and tears she can muster.

Of course, we know Kady is rough around the edges, like Kady. At face value she may come off as a Slytherin. However, Kady’s rightful place is in Gryffindor, using her battle magic to defend those she loves. Putting her overwhelming abundance of determination, courage and bravery to good use.

Well, that’s a wrap on the Gryffindor sorting session. These three are exemplary members of their house, and I’ve no doubt they’ll make McGonagall proud.

Be sure to stick around, Fillorians, as we continue chugging along on The Magicians train! Next week for Magicians Monday, I’ll be exploring which characters from The Magicians would be sorted into Slytherin. So, don’t forget that glass of wine, your best b***h and your wittiest of one-liners. I solemnly swear Mondays will be magical. Here’s to no longer dreading the start of the week, Fillorians.
