The EW article that dropped today giving us all those wonderful first looks at Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange still doesn’t give us the actual name of Mads Mikkelsen’s character, but we do get some more information on him.
Mainly, that he’s the film’s main villain. As Kevin Feige says, “Mads’ character is a sorcerer who breaks off into his own sect.”
He then goes on to give some background, explain a bit of the film and the Sorcerer Supreme’s role in the universe, saying, “We will take audiences through sort of a guide to the multiverse, other dimensions, and there are amazing things out there — wonders that are going to be hopefully visually extremely interesting and unique to this movie. But there are also very scary things in these other dimensions.”
It’s the job of the Sorcerer Supreme to keep an eye on these other dimensions and keep the scary things from invading our world. However, Mads’s character believes otherwise. As Feige says in the interview, “[He] believes that the Ancient One is just protecting her own power base and that the world may be better off if we were to allow some of these other things through.”
This sounds a lot like Baron Mordo, but it can’t be him because Chiwetel Ejiofor is already playing that character. The only other character we can think of would be Doctor Druid, but then we’ve got Executive Producer Stephen Broussard saying, “I’ve seen lots of names thrown around. No one has quite picked the name that we’ve chosen for him. It would b fun to conceal that, if we can.”
