Per The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming Madonna biopic is searching for the star who will play the leading role, and the competition for the most material of girls is heating up! There are more than a few hopefuls in this race for the much-coveted role, which is viewed as one of the most desirable performances possible to add to a young actress’s IMDB page.

Casting director Carmen Cuba is responsible for finding the actress who will play Madonna in the movie, which will be co-written and directed by Madonna herself. According to the once and future queen of pop, her motivation for making the movie lies in the fact that, if she doesn’t do it, someone else will – and the people who have always tried to write movies about her are “always men,” she noted during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

In 2020, it was announced that the script would be co-written by Diablo Cody (the Oscar-winning screenwriter behind classics like Juno and Jennifer’s Body), but the writer subsequently left the project. Instead, Erin Cressida Wilson (Secretary, The Girl on the Trail) will be co-writing the script.
This is not the first time that a musician’s biopic has included the musician themselves behind the camera: one example is the 2019 Elton John biopic Rocketman, which saw the musician serving as executive producer and his husband, David Furnish, producing the movie through their co-owned Rocket Pictures.

Among the top contenders for the part are Julia Garner (Ozark) and Marvel Studios’ Yelena actress Florence Pugh. Also in consideration are Alexa Demie (Euphoria), Odessa Young (Mothering Sunday) and Emma Laird (Mayor of Kingstown). In addition to individuals best known for their acting, several musical artists are also being considered for the part, including Bebe Rexha and Sky Ferreira (who also appeared in Baby Driver).
The reason musicians are in the running? According to reports, the ideal candidate for the role will not just be a stellar actor. She will also need to have the singing and dancing chops to play the part. In order to ensure the actress who is cast will be able to perform in these necessary capacities, the audition process includes choreographer sessions with both Madonna herself and Madonna’s choreographer.
As if that’s not already enough pressure, there are also rounds of callbacks that involve reading lines and singing auditions with Madonna. And the candidate who is cast in the role will be undertaking months’ worth of intense training once they have been given the role in order to fulfill the obligations associated with the performance.
While the project is already attracting a lot of attention, it still hasn’t been officially given the green light by the studio. According to reports, the actress who is cast in the eponymous role could be a major consideration in whether or not the movie is ultimately approved by Universal Pictures, which will serve as the distributor for the project.
