When first joining 9-1-1, Maddie Buckley (Jennifer Love Hewitt) was just Buck’s (Oliver Stark) sister. However, as the episodes went by and viewers learned more about her story, she became one of the show’s most important and beloved characters. Through Maddie’s character, the show has shone a light on crucial subjects.
At first, Maddie kept her situation with her ex-husband a secret, afraid of how others may see her. Nevertheless, viewers got to witness the consequences of the domestic violence she had suffered. It made clear why she was hesitant to start another relationship. After her ex-husband’s reappearance, her being taken by him, and ultimately killing him, Maddie was able to open up to love again fully.

Chimney (Kenneth Choi) brought joy and hope to Maddie’s life, reminding her she is worthy of love. With this newfound relationship, Maddie became a mother and, later, wife. But with motherhood came another challenge she had to face.
After giving birth to her daughter, Maddie struggled with postpartum depression. This was another instance in which the show brought awareness to some struggles women face. Maddie left her daughter with Chimney, knowing that would be the best thing for the little girl. As hard as it may be for some to understand, Maddie had to go away to return stronger for herself and her daughter.
The Real Deal
As a 9-1-1 operator, Maddie gives her all to every call. Although some may see this as a downfall, her ability to connect with the person on the other side of the phone makes her such a valuable employee. Even though, at times, her emotions get the best of her, it’s what helps people in an emergency stay as calm as possible until the firefighters or the police arrive.

As a sister, Maddie is the perfect representation of an older sister. She has always tried to protect Buck, even when that meant disagreeing with their parents to help her brother. The bond she shares with her brother is very special and one of the things that lets viewers know that Maddie is a loving, caring and understanding sister and woman.
Why She Matters
From the very beginning of her story, 9-1-1 has shown us Maddie’s strength. Even though life has faced her with severe challenges, she has always found a way to make it out alive.
So, be like Maddie Buckley-Han. Take the time to heal your own wounds. Protect your siblings fiercely. Listen carefully before acting. Marry the one you love when the time is right. And always remember how strong you are.
