There’s a new heroine in town. Sony’s upcoming Marvel live-action installment finally has an official trailer. Madame Web represents a pivot from the superhero formula as the entertainment juggernaut’s standalone narrative. It’s also an origin story for one of Marvel Comics’ most mystifying characters.
Here’s a synopsis per Sony Picture Entertainment’s press site:
“‘Meanwhile, in another universe…’ In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures…if they can all survive a deadly present.”

In the trailer, we see Cassandra’s near-death experience lead to strange abilities and her connection to Julia Carpenter (Sydney Sweeney), Mattie Franklin (Celeste O’Connor) and Anya Corazon (Isabela Merced). She’s also pursued by Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim), who’s dressed like an evil Spider-Man. Of course, the character eventually carries the Spidey mantle in the Earth-4 universe.
Since Cassandra possesses clairvoyance, she sees snippets of the future throughout the trailer. This includes fleeting shots of Julia, Mattie and Anya in their superhero getup. In the comics, Julia is known as the second Spider-Woman who later becomes Madame Web (after Cassandra). As for Mattie, she’s the third Spider-Woman and the niece of J. Jonah Jameson. Lastly (but not least), Anya eventually transforms into Spider-Girl.

I’m intrigued, although this trailer exposes more plot points than I’d like. I like my trailers with mystery and a sprinkling of narrative reveals here and there. We need enough of that intrigue to compel us to flock to the theater.
Madame Web also stars Mike Epps, Adam Scott, Zosia Mamet and Emma Roberts in an undisclosed (but significant) role. SJ Clarkson directs from a script by Clarkson and Claire Parker and a story by Kerem Sanga. The character of Madame Web was created by Denny O’Neil and John Romita Jr., with her first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #210, published in November 1980.
Brace yourself as Cassandra Webb weaves a new tale when Madame Web hits theaters in 2024. In the meantime, check out the trailer below.
