Oh, what a day! What a lovely day! Mad Max prequel Furiosa has nabbed its star, Deadline reports. Actress Anya Taylor-Joy will portray a younger version of Charlize Theron‘s Imperator Furiosa from Mad Max: Fury Road.
Now, director George Miller initially toyed with the idea of utilizing de-aging technology so Theron could reprise the role. However, Miller decided against it and sought after an actress in her 20s to play young Furiosa. Enter: Anya Taylor-Joy.
But wait! There’s more! Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Adbul-Mateen II have also been cast in Furiosa! As of now, we don’t know who the above will be playing. Miller will not only direct — the legendary creator will also co-write and produce Furiosa with longtime producing partner Doug Mitchell.
Mad Max: Fury Road was nominated for Best Picture and Best Director at the 2015 Academy Awards. Theron’s Furiosa became a symbol of female empowerment and total badassery as she fought against the formidable Immortan Joe. It was only a matter of time before an origin story took form.
Taylor-Joy recently concluded filming for Edgar Wright‘s Last Night in Soho. She also starred in the critically lauded Emma. Hemsworth’s recent credits include Avengers: Endgame and Extraction. Abdul-Mateen II portrayed Black Manta in James Wan‘s Aquaman. He’s currently filming The Matrix 4.
As much as I’d love to see Theron back in the saddle again, I understand the need for finding someone age-appropriate to play a younger character. I absolutely adored Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road and I’m tickled pink to watch her undoubtedly impressive backstory unfurl. Hemsworth and Abdul-Mateen II are both exemplary performers. Bring it on!
