DISCLAIMER: This recap of Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. episode “What Menace Doth the Mailman Deliver!” is rife with spoilers. You’ve been warned. Proceed at your own peril.

Welcome back, pitiful humans! We’ve reached penultimate episode territory for Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K.! “What Menace Doth the Mailman Deliver!” finds our titular character with a surprisingly sunny disposition. He returns to his mailroom duties with a rather pleasant demeanor, much to the confusion of everyone around him. M.O.D.O.K. mends fences with Monica and launches “A-I-M 2,” which is vastly different from A.I.M. Tony Stark now owns the latter. Austin bites it and Hexus the Living Corporation makes a final push toward destroying M.O.D.O.K. In short, sh*t goes down. We’re now one step closer to the endgame (Avengers reference).

Ready to delve into “What Menace Doth the Mailman Deliver!”? Let’s get to it.

Now, we open with M.O.D.O.K. (voiced by Patton Oswalt) visiting Melter’s gravesite. He feels disenfranchised. Uninspired. Even though he just won an unofficial foot race with Melter’s widower and her son to Melter’s tombstone! He sees a bevy of folks all around him blatantly hinting that he should start a new chapter and embrace new beginnings. But if I’ve learned anything, it’s to avoid listening to people who have sex in cemeteries.

Next, M.O.D.O.K. shows up to work the following day with a new ‘tude. He refrains from insulting Austin (voiced by Beck Bennett) and Monica (voiced by Wendi McLendon-Covey). He’s even nice to Gary (voiced by Sam Richardson). Something’s amiss here. Perhaps this mental organism designed only for killing is killing them with kindness. Get it?

Meanwhile, Austin is meeting with the enigmatic GRUMBL board a.k.a. Hexus the Living Corporation. They want to speed up the launch of the GRUMBL GRome, a dome-like device that acts as a speaker. It can communicate to every human across the world, thus making it easier for Hexus to drain them of their life force. They demand that Austin get it done. Oh, and his dog Sherlock will be the first to die when the inevitable killing starts. That’s just mean.

Then, Austin hosts a meeting with Monica and co., wherein he reveals that the GRome must be ready for release. M.O.D.O.K. chimes in and divulges that he can fix the GRome’s bugs. Austin assigns the GRome to M.O.D.O.K. and leaves Monica with her humanoids.

Later, Gary is having marital problems with his husband. He’s so preoccupied with thoughts of M.O.D.O.K. Gary now believes that Austin is trying to kill M.O.D.O.K, so he decides to take out the GRUMBL bro himself. Marriage be damned! Austin endeavors to disclose GRUMBL’s real deal i.e. Hexus the Living Corporation to M.O.D.O.K. Monica vows to uncover M.O.D.O.K.’s actual motives since his behavior is unnerving.

Next, Austin attempts to coerce M.O.D.O.K. into taking a break and joining him for a walk outside. Away from GRUMBL’s prying eyes. However, M.O.D.O.K. is too busy tinkering the GRome. Austin is called back to meet with the board in the elevator. Gary tries to murder him, but his snake idea crashes and burns. Monica captures Gary. He shoots his own hand off when she’s not looking so he can escape. Austin climbs in to Monica’s fusion machine and inadvertently fuses himself with his dog, Sherlock. It’s a man/dog hybrid! A Mog!

Now, M.O.D.O.K. enters the board room with something to say. Monica is under the impression that he’s there to kill her. Thankfully, that’s not the case. Iron Man (voiced by Jon Hamm) appears. M.O.D.O.K. reveals that he sold his shares of A.I.M. to Iron Man. He slips Monica a check from Tony Stark and urges her to sell her shares as well. She eagerly agrees to this since, you know, homeboy is rich as hell. Stark officially owns A.I.M., negating M.O.D.O.K.’s initial contract with GRUMBL. Stark’s first order of business? Fire Monica and M.O.D.O.K.

Prior to leaving, Monica injects Austin with a substance that separates him from his pup. Leave science to the scientists! Then, M.O.D.O.K. proposes that Monica join him in creating a new company: “A-I-M 2.” She can retain her Scientist Supreme title while he’ll be “Scientist Supremer.” She’s game. I’m glad these two mended fences. Austin frantically runs across the road to warn M.O.D.O.K. about GRUMBL when Gary instantly kills him with his truck. M.O.D.O.K. encourages Gary to join them since he’s unwavering in his loyalty.

Later, A-I-M 2 has found a building to set up shop. They can officially focus on taking over the world. Back at A.I.M., we see the GRUMBL board is hiring a new CEO to replace Austin (RIP). They also disclose their latest objective — to murder M.O.D.O.K. for good.

“What Menace Doth the Mailman Deliver!” propels the plot forward more so than any episode thus far. With the Baby M.O.D.O.K., Monica and Austin stories resolved, I’m curious to see how the season finale plays out. I can’t say enough just how wonderful Oswalt is in this role. If anyone else were to take up the M.O.D.O.K. mantle I wouldn’t accept it. Oswalt just is M.O.D.O.K. I love his growth over the course of the season.

Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. is now streaming on Hulu.
