As if growing up wasn’t scary enough, M. Night Shyamalan‘s new movie Old makes it terrifying. The film is inspired by the graphic novel Sandcastle by Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peeters. The first trailer debuted during the 2021 Super Bowl.
Old stars Gael Garcia Bernal, Eliza Scanlen, Thomasin McKenzie, Aaron Pierre, Alex Wolff, Vicky Krieps, Abbey Lee, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Ken Leung, Rufus Sewell, Embeth Davidtz and Emun Elliott. A group of people find a dead body on a beach and slowly realize there is something unnatural happening on that beach.
The trailer starts out with a couple of cute kids playing on the beach. They play hide and seek and return as adults. Something about the island made them rapidly grow up. And somehow, the little girl becomes pregnant and appears to give birth within minutes. What the heck is going on? The creepiest part of the trailer is the end when a man practically watches himself decay. No one wants to grow old, but that man ages way too quickly.
Collider reports that the film is inspired by the graphic novel, but is not a direct adaptation. In Sandcastle, the group is trapped on the secluded beach that is hiding a secret involving time. Looks like Shyamalan will put his own twist on the film. With him, anything is possible. The island could be alive and drains the life-force of anyone who finds it. Or there’s something in the water. Yikes! Watch the trailer and check out the film poster below.
Old is currently set to release in theaters on July 23, 2021.
