During the Square Enix digital showcase today, we got another look at the upcoming narrative-driven adventure originally titled Project Athia. Luminous Productions didn’t just drop a brand new trailer for its debut title; it also shared its official name – Forspoken. Players will control Frey Holland, an ordinary woman who must learn to harness her magical abilities to survive in this extraordinary world packed with fantastical beasts, mystical enemies and a few dragons.

Forspoken‘s trailer kicks off with a brief interview with Ella Balinska, the actress behind not only Frey’s voice lines but performance capture as well. She shared that the Luminous Productions team has been working extra hard to bring the world and its inhabitants to life over this past year. While they aren’t ready to share everything, they do have a small clip to hold us over.
The scene shows Frey in an abandoned building as a dragon begins to stir outside. A voice inside her head tells her to hide as the dragon gets ever closer to the opening. I can say without a doubt that I would have had the same reaction as Frey when coming into contact with a dragon. Thankfully, it doesn’t realize she is there and flies away. Unfortunately, the voice tells Frey it’s time to get moving, forcing her out into the world where the dragon is just one of my creatures waiting for her.
Following this scene, we can an intricate logo revealing with lives weaving in and out of each other before revealing the game’s official title Forspoken. We then get a few quick clips of gameplay where we can see Frey’s powers in use as she moves throughout Athia and faces off against it’s denizens. The cutscene and gameplay show off the stunning graphics we can expect to see when Forspoken releases. But, we do have quite a few questions that still need to be answered.
First and foremost, who is the voice in Frey’s head? This is the first time we are being semi-introduced to him. Is he another denizen of Athia, or does he play a larger role? We also want to know how and why Frey is in Athia. What transpired to bring her to this fantastical yet terrifying world? It will also be interesting to see how her abilities work and what kind of system they will have to learn and level new ones. Honestly, there is still so much we want to know, but it will be a bit before we get more answers.
Forspoken is set to release in 2022 for PC and PlayStation 5. You can check out the full trailer and images below. Are you excited to explore the world of Athia and uncover its mysteries? Let us know in the comments below and on social media!
