Marvel's Luke Cage

A new Luke Cage video was released over the weekend.

It’s not much, but the content of the message is enough — Marvel’s very own bulletproof black man, Luke Cage, is coming back for a second season on Netflix!

There are no other details other than the season two order. Villains, plots, returning cast or even release date — none of that is clear. The only thing that is clear is that Mike Colter will be returning as Luke Cage.

We can assume that the series will come after Iron Fist, which premieres in March, and Defenders, the Avengers like team-up series that will see all four main characters — Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist — teaming up. It’s also a safe assumption that the second season will come sometime after the second season of Jessica Jones and the first season of The Punisher, which is in production right now for a 2017 release.

All of this added together would point to a 2018 release.

This also makes it difficult to guess what the plot might be for the second season. Having the Defenders in there between seasons one and two throws off our prediction-bot 5000. The end of season one saw Luke Cage going back to Seagate Prison to serve the rest of his sentence, but the Defenders can’t be the Defenders without Cage. This means they’ll have to break him out of prison, or have him released. As such, this completely opens up the second season and makes way for any of the other three defenders to join the series.

This is especially tricky as well because, in the comics, Luke Cage has history with both Iron Fist and Jessica Jones: Iron Fist is his longtime crime-fighting partner and Jessica Jones is his wife and the mother to his daughter, Danielle. So, season two could go either way, or not at all.

Just about the only thing we can guess at is that we’ll love this season as much as we did the first.
