Welcome to this week’s installment of Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week, wherein we shine a spotlight on strong women who inspire us. These ladies are a prime example of female empowerment and how crucial it is for youth to have said example to follow.

SPOILER WARNING: The following article will contain spoilers for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Not caught up on the series? Check it out!

Lucyna Kushinada, or Lucy as she’s referred to most often, is a netrunner in Netflix’s new Cyberpunk: Edgerunners animated series. Emi Lo voices her in the English adaptation. She is also behind the voice of Suma in Demon Slayer and Uta in Netflix’s animated movie Bubble

Lucy is a level-head, street-smart netrunner with a top-tier sense of self-preservation. She appears in every episode of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and is responsible for recruiting the lead character (turned boyfriend) into the Edgerunner crew. Though the show is not technically her story, her actions are pivotal to the plot, her goals are central to the theming, and her skills are what allow the crew to run at the pace they do.

The Real Deal:

All that being said, Lucy Kushinada is truly the real deal. Being a netrunner means Lucy can disrupt the cyberware of other people, leaving them shocked, stunned or even unconscious. Once her target has been neutralized, she can enter their consciousness via the port in the back of her head or with one of the other cybernetic enhancements that allow her to hack on the fly.

Lucy is not only a total baddie but a total hottie. As confirmed in a flashback, she sports naturally white hair cut into an asymmetrical split bob with a rainbow gradient. Her slight frame never detracts from the power she holds in every scene; even when shown next to hulking characters, Lucy is a force of nature. The contrast in her demeanor makes her stand out from the chrome junkies and psychonauts that populate Night City. Her calm, level-headed aloofness is almost hypnotic compared to the ruckus antics of the other characters in the show.

Why She Matters:

So why does Lucy matter? Lucy is the voice of reason in the Edgerunner crew, and she represents a sense of hope through her rare escape from Night City. Unlike others, Lucy does not earn her freedom through deceit and instead displays an unmatched sense of loyalty. However, this sense of loyalty doesn’t infringe on her sense of self-preservation. Lucy knows when she needs to step back to avoid burnout or self-harm. A quality that many of us could stand to gain.

Lucyna Kushinada is an introverted yet independent netrunner with a rocking bod who could kill you with the power of her mind. Only a choom would stand in her way, and yet we long to her in her presence.

So, be like Lucyna Kushinada, channel your inner badass and shoot for the moon.
