Lucy MacLean
Fast Facts:
Lucy MacLean (Ella Purnell) is one of the three main protagonists in the Fallout television series. The show takes place in a future that stemmed from an alternate history in which the world was ravaged by nuclear bombs during the Great War of 2077. The Vault-Tec corporation created a series of underground vaults throughout the United States to save its people and eventually rebuild America in its image.

Around two centuries later, we join Lucy who was born and raised in Vault 33. The vault dwellers have created a place that replicates the simple and wholesome lifestyle they knew before the bombs were dropped. This means Lucy grew up in a world of naivety, not aware of the horror that had raged above them for hundreds of years.
Lucy lives in the underground sanctuary with her brother, Norman (Moises Arias) and her father, Hank MacLean (Kyle MacLachlan), who is the overseer of Vault 33. At the beginning of the series, we learn that Lucy’s mother, Rose, died from starvation during a plague when Lucy was very young.

You must find ways to stay busy when you are locked underground your entire life and Lucy certainly has made the most of her time. She participates in the Young Pipefitter’s Association, gymnastics club, fencing and riflery. She also is an avid reader, especially engineering manuals. However, her passion is teaching American history with a focus on ethics. In the future, most of these skills end up saving her life.
The Real Deal
Things change abruptly for Lucy when she agrees to an arranged marriage to someone from the neighboring vault. She feels this is the best way for her to help fulfill the Vault-Tec dream. We also begin to see that Lucy is naturally curious and throws caution to the wind to satiate her curiosity. However, Vault 33 soon finds out that their neighbors are not what they seem and Lucy’s new husband is actually with a dangerous raider party.

The raiders wreak havoc and kill several vault dwellers but Lucy manages to escape her captor after a scuffle. Unfortunately, she escapes only to see her father being kidnapped by the leader of the raiders, Moldaver (Sarita Choudhury). This is when Lucy’s real adventure begins and she quickly discovers there is more to the Vaults and herself than she could imagine.
There is no question that Lucy MacLean is brave. After her father is kidnapped by the raiders, she leaves the safety of the only home she knows to journey into an unknown world of danger and violence. As far as she knows, the world above is considered so hazardous no one has ever gone up there. Lucy does not hesitate and immediately sets her fear aside and rushes out alone to save her father.

When Lucy ends up in the hands of some black market organ dealers, she manages to not only free herself but several captive ghouls as well. We later see one of the ghouls she rescued living a new life in a refugee camp. She even saves The Ghoul (Walton Goggins) who put her in this situation in the first place. So we know she at least saved two lives from that ordeal alone.
Lucy also saves Maximus (Aaron Moten), a Knight of the Brotherhood, who becomes trapped in the very armor meant to keep him safe. These kind actions Lucy takes throughout her journey end up paying off because she makes unlikely allies in Maximus and The Ghoul. Many of the people Lucy helped throughout her journey end up saving her life so sometimes it pays to be kind.

Faced with one horrific hurdle after another, Lucy survives everything from almost being swallowed by a gulper to a standoff with The Ghoul. In the end, with her many skills, positive attitude, a little luck and some help from new friends, Lucy eventually accomplishes her goal. Unfortunately, this only reveals more shocking details about her past and sends her out on another harrowing journey to New Vegas. Good luck, Lucy!
Why She Matters
Lucy MacLean is a shining beacon of morality in a world of darkness and morally gray values. She is kind, loving, curious and clever. But in the world above, she quickly realizes that her sheltered and morally righteous upbringing will do her no good here. Yes, Lucy is naïve, but she knows that and this self-awareness pushes her past her limits.

Lucy teaches us that it is important to have a moral compass but it is also possible to change your ideals based on new information. She goes through things that would defeat the most hardened explorer but she answers every challenge, with ‘Okey Dokey.’ However, the enthusiasm behind the statement understandably dwindles as the show goes on.
Although she is new to life outside of the vaults, she is resourceful and adapts quickly to her surroundings. She cleverly uses the many skills acquired in the vault to survive in this strange new world. Be like Lucy, don’t let naivety or ignorance be your downfall. Live your life by The Golden Rule and treat others the way you want to be treated, it just might save your life someday.
