“Lucky Girl”: Reviewing The 2001 Canadian Film

The 2001 Canadian film, “Lucky Girl”, provides a dramatic and emotional glimpse of how gambling addiction can negatively impact one’s life. The movie stars Are You Afraid of the Dark, Happy Endings and The Ranch star Elisha Cuthbert (Kaitlyn Palmerston), Sherry Miller (Valerie Palmerston), Jonathan Whittaker (Alastair Palmerston), and Evan Sabba (Ron Lunderman). Canadian John Fawcett directed the film.

Cuthbert’s character, Kaitlyn, is a popular and intelligent high school student who quickly discovers a love for gambling thanks to beginner’s luck. She wins a game of poker with friends at her birthday party en route to a nice payout.

Aside from frequent in-person poker, Kaitlyn also becomes addicted to online gambling. Her parents grow concerned over it, and a discouraged Kaitlyn even sees her school grades decline.

Kaitlyn uses her mother’s credit card to play online gambling, which leads to friction in their relationship. A desperate Kaitlyn gets involved with a loan shark named Blair without considering the dangers.

When it comes to any form of addiction, step one is admitting that there’s a problem. But when Kaitlyn’s loved ones try speaking to her about it, she continuously denies it. At one point, Kaitlyn even has to help stage a break-in/robbery of her own home, but she pretends to have known nothing about it when her parents make the terrible discovery.

As her debts rack up, Kaitlyn gets herself into more and more danger through Blair as well as his wife, Judy. When they threaten her to greater lengths, Kaitlyn is rescued by her mother and friend, Ron.

The police arrest both Blair and Judy, and a relieved Kaitlyn goes back to a normal life, having repaired the relationships with her family and friends.

“Lucky Girl” Has Excellent Pacing, Emotion & Morals For The Audience

As noted in the intro, top gambling films largely stress the importance of gambling carefully, and not to the point where it’s taking over your life.

Blockbusters such as The Gambler (1974), Casino (1995) and Adam Sandler’s 2019 hit, Uncut Gems all center around the main character(s) getting themselves into significant trouble because of gambling-related issues.

The characters will rack up significant debt and/or find their lives in jeopardy because of their involvement with the wrong people through gambling. As well, gambling — like any form of addiction — can seriously affect one’s relationship with friends and family members.

For better or worse, these films strongly emphasize that one cannot let gambling take over their life. Lucky Girl creatively does all of this, showing how one can go from simply enjoying the odd gambling game to suddenly letting it take over everyday life.

Lucky Girl has the important aspects you want in a film. It has good pacing/structure and dramatic buildup which leads to the tense/nail-biting climax. With Kaitlyn’s character, we can see how sinister and troublesome gambling addiction can become.

But the film ends on a positive and inspiring note. Thanks largely to her loved ones refusing to give up on her, Kaitlyn escapes further danger and manages to get her life back on track.

Acknowledging there’s an issue, and knowing it has to be addressed, is the way out. You can have fun through online gambling, in-person poker, slots, roulette and more. But it’s also pivotal to always do so responsibly.

Lucky Girl was released 21 years before mobile/online sports betting became legal in Ontario. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, it would absolutely be worth your time as it outlines the importance of gambling with caution.
