LUCIFER Recap: (S03E07) Off the Record

Lucifer

Lucifer opens on an extreme close-up. A man (Patrick Fabian) slowly opens his eyes. Looking around, he’s in a hospital room. A nurse hovers over him, “Welcome back to the land of the living”. He looks around, eventually asking after his wife. The couple have been fighting lately. However, he’s disappointed as he learns he hasn’t had any visitors.

Later, the man clutches a boquet of flowers as he readies to enter his house. A hurt look flashes over his face as he hears something inside… his wife giggling in the company of another man. He jumps back into the bushes as the door opens. Lucifer (Tom Ellis) quickly exits, “Sorry to shag and run darling”.

Lucifer

The man tails Lucifer back to Lux. He watches with a disgusted smirk as Lucifer takes shots surrounded by gorgeous women. However, Lucifer suddenly materializes next to him. Why is this strange man following him? And no… Lucifer won’t sleep with him. As the tension grows between the two men, everything suddenly stops as Chloe (Lauren German) enters. She needs Lucifer at a crime scene… now.

It seems Getty is an investigative journalist, and he knows just how to bring Lucifer down. Finally securing permission from his editor, he follows Lucifer to the station. Lucifer is giddy at the promise of a journalistic exposé. This will be fun.

Later, Getty moves through the station. Each one recounts glowing stories of Lucifer. Everyone here just loves him! However, the stories stop as he gets to Dan (Kevin Alejandro). He really does’t like Lucifer… someone keeps eating his pudding. He stops as Chloe enters. She hates the press, and flatly vetoes the press attention. She doesn’t need someone following them around.

However, it turns out their lieutenant and his editor are very close. He will be observing them over the course of their daily duties.

Later, they come across the crime scene. A woman lays dead along a picturesque path. It seems in life she was a natural beauty celebrity. The cause of death is likely the needles are jammed into her neck. This is most definitely foul play. Chloe details pervious cases… this must be the work of a serial killer.

As night falls over Los Angeles, Getty follows Lucifer to a building, watching a suspicious looking bag drop. However, before he can do anything, he’s slammed against a wall. Maze (Lesley-Ann Brandt) is back! He’s quickly floored by the demon, before she disappears just as quickly.

Later, Getty returns to his office, where he learns an uncomfortable fact. His wife tracked him down. He quickly straightens his hair as he pushes through the door. It turns out his wife is Linda (Rachael Harris). She turns around, “Reese, we need to talk”. Furthermore, she is far from happy to see him, “Why are people calling me your wife?”. He looks confused as she gives him a dose of reality. It seems the couple are separated. They have been for two years. He begs for more time… he’ll sign the divorce papers when he can finish this case.

That night, Getty breaks into Lucifer’s penthouse. He needs to solve the bag drop… what was in the duffle bag Lucifer picked up? Breaking into his penthouse, the man stumbles onto a suspicious scene. A woman is tied up on the bed. However, as he starts to untie her, Lucifer interrupts him. It seems the woman is not there against her will. It’s kinda hot…

Later, Getty observes Chloe and Lucifer inside the station interrogation room. Chloe exits, leaving Lucifer alone with a suspect. Like clockwork Lucifer morphs into his devil face, eventually coaxing out the answers he needs. (I thought he didn’t have his devil face anymore!).

A panicked Getty rushes to see Linda. However, she is not excited to see him. This becomes especially evident after he tries to out Lucifer’s identity to his wife. It seems Linda wants a divorce, and demands he finally sign the papers. He reluctantly does, and storms from the room.

Reese returns to his office and dives headfirst into a crazy person board. He has to crack this Lucifer thing…

Suddenly, the camera cuts to the same scene, one year later. Reese finally comes up for air as Lucifer and Chloe knock at the door. They explain the serial killer went dormant, and they need his help.

Lucifer ends the conversation, telling everyone he is late for therapy. However, Reese knows exactly what this means. He barges into Linda’s office, interrupting Lucifer in mid-sentence. Before anyone can say anything, Reese fires a gun.

“You just ruined a perfectly good Burberry!” Lucifer cries, quickly standing up. He watches as Linda expertly handles her husband. She knows Lucifer is the devil. None of this is a surprise. However, Reese’s feelings are hurt and he storms off.

He arrives at the house of the police’s latest suspect. It seems they tracked the serial killer to a number of graphic comments on the LA Telegraph website, made under a single handle. The man extends his hands to be arrested, but Getty stops him. He’s just writing a story, after all.

Later, Getty sits across from Chloe, throwing more questions at her. Over her shoulder, we see Lucifer take a glass from the suspect. Is it poisoned? However, a scream goes up from the crowd as a nearby girl collapses. She’s dead.

Lucifer

That night, Getty angrily storms into the penthouse, waving a knife in front of him. He’s guilt-stricken about the dead girl. However, Lucifer’s equally on edge. Why do humans keep blaming him for everything? This is not his doing. He smoothly turns the table, pulling Getty’s greatest desire out of him. Suddenly everything becomes clear. Linda is Getty’s wife, and Lucifer is the man he’s struggling to bring revenge on.

Having suddenly seen the light, Getty returns to see Linda, accepting the blame for their current situation. He ruined their marriage. She stands up, admitting they were both to blame. However, when she doesn’t immediately take him back, he looses his composure. He confesses to everything everything: the serial killer, the poison, the dead girl. There’s a brief struggle, but Getty is on edge. He looks around, “Let me make this right”.

Later, Getty stands in his office. He sputters as he sips a drink. It’s poison. He laughs as the killer emerges from behind him. However, it seems everything was a set-up as Chloe jumps out from the darkness, arresting the killer. However, everything seems too late as Getty closes his eyes.

As episode finally comes to a close, we’re right back where we started in the hospital room. Getty snaps awake. “Is my wife here?”.

Lucifer airs Monday nights on Fox.

A Few Notes:

  • I hope these non-continuity episodes are running out. They really should have aired last season, because they feel like they belong there. The continuity changed so much between seasons two and three that these definitely leap out.
  • I’m still trying to decide how I feel about this episode. This felt clunky and a bit dull. The jumps in timelines felt strange and un-Lucifer. Elements of this story felt like it didn’t work, and it stands as one of the worst of the young season for me.
