Lucifer opens in the station, the officers are gathered around as they sing Chloe (Lauren German) a halfhearted rendition of Happy Birthday. However, the voices trail off as a larger cake is wheeled in… it’s a person sized cake. Suddenly, the top pops off and a police uniform wearing, male stripper leaps from the cake. Lucifer (Tom Ellis) enters with a mischievous grin; however, the cake wasn’t his doing. Ella (Aimee Garcia) stands above them, throwing singles from the balcony. “Make it rain, birthday girl!”.
However, the moment comes to an end as Lucifer’s phone rings. He steps into an office to take the call. It seems his ex-wife Candy (Lindsay Gort) is missing. He stops as Ella enters… while she has a “thing” with Vegas, she’s going to help him solve the case. Lucifer and Ella rush off, leaving a surprised Chloe watching as strippers grind up against her.
Later, Lucifer and Ella arrive in Vegas, stumbling on an active crime scene. They drop to their knees next to a dead body sprawled in a hotel room. Could this be Candy? However, as they look over her dainty little feet, Lucifer realizes it isn’t her… Candy’s feet are gigantic.
Lucifer and Ella do some fast talking as the investigating detective notices them. What is Lucifer doing in Vegas? However, it becomes clear that the LVPD doesn’t realize that the body isn’t Candy. Should they tell them?
Meanwhile, Chloe pays Linda (Rachael Harris) a visit. She sits down on the couch, finally spilling everything to the therapist. “It’s my birthday!” Chloe says, the frustration growing in her voice. She looks around, “Wow, good couch”.
Later, Lucifer and Ella stand outside the hotel. Who would want Candy dead? He flashes back to when they first met. He remembers an interaction Candy had with a loanshark named Louie. However, when they pay Louie a visit, someone beat them there… he lays in his living room, dead.
They go through the the house slowly. It seems the murderer staged the crime scene to look like a faked suicide. Could Candy have murdered him and then faked her death to disappear?
Chloe and Linda visit Lucifer’s penthouse, and Decker is disappointed to see Lucifer did go out of town on her birthday. The women decide they are going to celebrate… and they know a place with the best views in the city. The action cuts to a drunken Linda and Chloe partying in the penthouse. Chloe looks up after throwing back a drink, they should go through Lucifer’s sock drawer! However, the mood changes when Linda answers a call from Lucifer. He is open with the fact that he is in Vegas… which angers Chloe. Why would he be with someone ravishing on her birthday? It seems Chloe still has some healing to do. The women stop talking as they stumble on a safe…
Meanwhile, Lucifer and Ella hit the casino. They make a nice run at the blackjack table, but are quickly stopped by floor security. It seems Ella possesses an infamous ability to count cards…
At the same time, Linda and Chloe are struggling to break into the safe. Could the code be 666? Perhaps it 8008, “it spells boob”. However, the women look up as Dan (Kevin Alejandro) enters. It seems the ever useful detective thought to bring a saw with him.
Later, Lucifer flashes back once again to his early interactions with Candy. The two hit it off immediately. They eat ice cream while wrapped in snuggies. It seems the two are quite alike. He sits up and adjusts his snuggie, “Marry me!”.
However, Lucifer is snapped to reality by Candy’s voice. The woman stands across from him wearing a wig. She describes her murder as a Laura-esque (look it up, kids!) crime. It seems the dead woman was a friend of Candy’s who was living with her. Candy dove into an investigation, keeping herself in disguise to find out who wanted her dead.
Later, Lucifer stands on-stage crooning out a batch of Las Vegas standards (swoon!) as a troop of showgirls dance behind him. It seems one of them is Ella. As they perform, they talk with Candy who hovers in the audience, looking for someone suspicious. Everything points back to Candy’s nightclub… could this be the motive for all the killing?
Meanwhile, Chloe, Linda and Dan are still struggling to break into the safe. While Dan rushes off to spackle the hole he put in the wall, Chloe vents to Linda. She’s struggling to bring her feelings under control, and she hates that. Why does she sound jealous?
Back in Vegas, Lucifer looks in the mirror as the bartender appears behind him. The man draws a gun… we have our bad guy. He fires twice, but can’t kill Lucifer. The man is perplexed as Candy suddenly appears across from him. “I killed you!”. She appears hauntingly (The Lady from Shanghi-esque) in a mirror, throwing the man into hysterics. There’s a beat before Ella fires, taking the man down.
While Ella flirts with the LVPD detective, Lucifer talks with Candy. She sends him back to LA. He needs to fix things with Chloe, “What are you still doing here, you Devil?”.
Lucifer enters the penthouse to find his friends passed out around the room. He stops in his bedroom, where Chloe is asleep on his bed. Lucifer sits on the edge of the bed, confessing emotionally to everything. He doesn’t want to lie… especially to her. As the camera pans back, we see Chloe’s eyes are open. She’s heard everything…
He stands up and opens the safe and Chloe sits up. Lucifer hands her a wrapped box… it’s a necklace. He kept the bullet from when she shot him, “It seems I’ll never likely penetrate you, so I’ll keep it from when you penetrated me”. The episode ends as the two embrace, both clearly wanting more.
Lucifer airs Monday nights on Fox.
A Few Notes:
- A fun episode to ring in “Noirvember”. While it may or may not have been intended, the writers packed the episode with fun, noir-esque troupes.
- Who has two thumbs and loves a Tom Ellis musical number? This girl!
- A great episode for all you Chloe and Lucifer shippers! You could practically feel the tension throughout the screen.
- Great, great work from Lauren German this episode. I loved seeing her struggle with her (realistic) feelings about Lucifer. She came across as open, relatable and realistic in her struggles. Loved it.
