Lucifer

Previously on Lucifer: Lt. Decker (Lauren German) stumbles from a smoking car crash. She’s bleeding and confused. Life can be fragile, especially when you keep company with angels. Especially a bunch of celestial beings who are tied together by their dysfunctional family life. A lingering question hangs over the story. Will God, or “Dad” as he’s affectionately known, kill Chloe? Lucifer has broken a promise to him by allowing “Mum” to remain on Earth. Will Dad go back on his word as well?

This week’s episode, “Weaponizer” sees Team Lucifer dropped into the grimy world of 1990’s action films as they investigate the death of movie star Wesley Cabot (Sean Millington). During his prime, he had stared in the popular franchise, “The Weaponizer”. Police found Cabot beaten to death with one his one action movie awards. As Lucifer attempts to take a selfie with the corpse, we learn he’s a huge fan.

The murder isn’t short on suspects. It isn’t long before Chloe and Lucifer meet the victim’s ex-wife Jamie Lee Adrienne (Charisma Carpenter), and his rival (and best friend) Kimo Vanzandt (Mark Dacascos). Jamie Lee gets one of the best lines of the episode (delivered as only Cordelia herself can). When Chloe asks her about her multiple marriages to action stars, she says, “It was the 90’s, we did a lot of coke.” Twitter was also quick to point out a delightfully nerdy reference. This episode hooked up Cordelia and Wesley. Many in the Buffy/Angel fandom on social media seemed to quickly pick up on the reference.

Complicating the story further is the sudden appearance of yet another brother in Lucifer’s ever growing family tree. Little brother Uriel (Michael Imperioli) cuts a strong figure. He has Lucifer quaking at the very real thought of loosing Chloe. This is the most rattled as we’ve seen the usually unflappable King of Hell. Actor Tom Ellis puts in a dynamic performance, as Lucifer struggles with not only his feelings for Decker, but also his loyalty towards his Mother, and his sense of betrayal at the hands of his Father.

The case is cracked when they discover Cabot’s studio contracts. The movie star had been earning a 1% profit on his action figure sales; however, the contracts read differently. He should have been making 10%. Furthermore, as Chloe arrives to continue her interview of the suspects, she finds Jamie Lee in a familiar embrace with Ryan Goldburg (Phil LaMarr), the business manager for both of her former husbands. The two had worked together. They not only carried out the murder, but also the framing of Vanzandt to take the fall.

As the episode comes to an end, Lucifer and Uriel face off in an intense action scene. The direction of Karen Gaviola adds a layer of stunning visuals to the well-crafted performances Ellis and Imperioli. The scene takes a step up when Maze (Lesley-Ann Brandt) enters the fight with some of the best fight choreography we’ve seen thus far. As Uriel locks Lucifer into a loose loose situation, he forces his brother into a difficult decision. With blood on his hands, and Uriel’s body on the floor, Lucifer is suddenly fragile and vulnerable. What kind of hell is this talented writing staff going to put the Prince of Darkness through? Only time will tell.

Lucifer airs Monday nights at 9/8 central on your local Fox affiliate.
