During Star Wars Celebration 2019, we didn’t learn too much about Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Executive producer Kathleen Kennedy was pretty mum on any details pertaining to the film. However, interviews back stage got her talking a bit more and we learned what is on the table for the future of Star Wars films. A future which includes a Knights of the Old Republic story.

Kennedy was being interviewed by MTV News, talking about the future of the franchise. With The Mandalorian coming in November and two different trilogies in development, what else could they be working on? Kennedy cited the possibilities expanding with the introduction of Disney+, saying they can explore “smaller stories” on the platform. When asked about a Knights of the Old Republic film, she immediately confirmed that something is in the works. “We talk about that all the time,” Kennedy said. “Yes, we are developing something to look at.” So good news, right? Well, the timeline is foggy as Kennedy explains. “Right now, I have no idea where things might fall.”

When the conversion shifted to female directors, Kennedy mentioned that there are female directors attached to The Mandalorian and that it will continue with the Cassian Andor series. It’s obvious that there are none in the lineup for films, however. Really hoping that changes but it doesn’t seem likely. Which is really unfortunate, given that Kennedy was so vocal about wanting women behind the lens. At least the series will have some women involved.

After The Rise of Skywalker, the films are taking a break. Kennedy cited Solo: A Star Wars Story as the reason they believe two films a year won’t work, which was interesting. Namely because many in the fandom voiced their dislike of remaining in the same time frame. Many of us are looking for new stories and new characters, not wanting to see how Han Solo got his name. Hopefully with these upcoming stories, we can get more new characters and more stories that stray further from the Skywalker saga. It will make this meatbag happy.

What do you think of a potential Knights of the Old Republic film? Are you on board or do you think they’ve mentioned it too many times before and will wait to see? Let us know! Be sure to come back to Geek Girl Authority for more Star Wars news.
